Subject: FN0301-Sockeye: Area 23 - Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet - Non Retention

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Effective 00:01 hours Thursday May 15, 2008 until further notice the daily
quota for sockeye salmon in Area 23, Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet, will be
zero (0).

The pre-season forecast for Somass Sockeye is 150,000. At this runsize there
is no available recreational catch. Meetings have been held with the South
Coast SFAB and the local Port Alberni SFAC. Discussions focused on the pre-
season forecast and recreational sockeye opportunities in Area 23.

The Somass Sockeye inseason stock assessment program will be in place in 2008.
This program collects escapement, test fishing, catch and environmental
information on a weekly basis. This information is then used to prepare a
weekly inseason run size reforecast.

While at this time a recreational sockeye fishery in Area 23 Barkley Sound and
Alberni Inlet is not anticipated, the weekly inseason run size will be closely
monitored. If the inseason run size reforecast indicates a substantially
larger return than the pre-season forecast fisheries may be possible. The
first inseason run size reforecast is scheduled for the first week of July.

The run won't be building when F.N. is netting the river every day..Then it is sold to everywhere else.

F u@# the First nations. They destroy everything they once stood for.

Is this the new definition of "fishing for food, ceremonial and social purposes"????

we can all buy $10 sockeyes in Port Albernie from the natives in a few months.... Id rather pay them $10 bucks to take thier nets out of the river and let the fish spawn.

I was just reading the local paper here in Port Alberni. The local native bands have decided that they will not fish this run of sockeye. They will wait for the chinook to show, the forcast for that run is good

In that case, my hat's off to them.

Excellent news..
Lets hope the gov't puts some money back into fertilizing the lakes like they used to, so it can support the juveniles.

Island Girl is right on, we need DFO to restart this program. Start writing your MP's and demand action. Think of the $$ millions that have left the local economy from 2 years of no recreational fishery for sockeye.

I talked to chieif les sam at work today. He was seriously concerned about the wild sockeye stocks in port.I say hes doing a good job with all the bands trying to stop the bands fishing this run
