Are Sharrow Marine propellers worth a try.

If half of what this guy says is true we will all have Sharrow props soon. Has anyone got them or know anybody who has one.

I've read about the Sharrow props extensively on TheHullTruth.com. My thoughts are NO, they are not worth getting for our kind of boating. There was one guy who bought a pair for his twin-outboard boat and ran the Sharrow props. His findings were that the low-speed planing and medium-speed planing saw fuel efficiency gains, but there were no efficiency gains at higher speeds. Combine that with $5000USD EACH....you'll never recover the fuel savings. And can you imagine the pain you'd feel if you hit a log and dinged one of these?! No thank you.

I believe that Sharrow has recently announced lower-cost aluminum versions but I feel like these would be even worse for durability in the event of striking driftwood in our waters.

The technology is very promising and bigger vessels and commercial users are where this technology will do well and realize economic savings.

whats considered higher speeds vs medium

A friend looked into putting them on his new boat. If you damage a ribbon prop with a chip or dent you cannot fix them and a new one I think has to come from Florida. I think he said the cost is around $4.5k (?) a prop. Sure could buy a lot of fuel with the savings from going S/S

They work great if you are running your boat at two speeds, off and 5,000 rpm +. They probably work great on a boat running drugs at 5,500+ rpms for 5 hours. Good for speed and gas savings.

He opted for S/S props.

With most of use using our boats for fishing and running on a kicker most of the time I think they are not worth it. If you damage one how many days will you be waiting to get a replacement. Maybe all of Aug.

Last trip out he was traveling at 35kt and was burning 44 gal per hour but that was only for 10 minutes. I guess he could save a few $$ for 10 minutes.

I think they manufacture in Detroit.

I know a commercial operator who puts 10,000 miles per year on his boat. He is saving 20% or more on his fuel bill with the sharrow props. The props make sense when you spend $100,000 a year on fuel. Sharrow also has some sort of extended warranty/insurance program that will replace a prop if you hit something. I don’t remember the cost or terms; it might be a one time replacement.

If you do a search on here with that brand name, there are a number of threads and a few people who have actually paid for them locally.
Crap I checked on the saltwater form, not motors etcetera. Oh well guess I got the answer I was looking for. Since I'm not going into drug smuggling or going to start bag running my engines anytime soon I be sticking with my conventional props. Makes me wounder what the dude on the promo video is doing with his boat! Or maybe he's just full of a well known substance. LMAO

I think if they have a booth at the boat show, and you can book a prop demo/sea trial with your boat, they would probably sell some if the seat of the pants feel is that noticeable, or obviously if you’re looking at a fuel flow gauge.

I have a buddy with a set. I will ask him. The guys on the Outdoorline have them....but there is likely some paid promotion there, but they put a 1000miles a year on them.

I think that was Tom Nelson from the outdoor line in the promo video. He probably got the props for free.

If you are chartering and running from Sooke to just past JR to hali fish, 15 times per year that is 35 hours of travel time at 25 mph or 875 miles. On average I would put 150+ hrs (4,700 rpm) on a engine per year and I would travel at 25 to 30 mph = 3,750 miles. I might have saved some $$$.

I would like to find out what the cost of a prop for a 300 hp Yam is now a days. Maybe I will give them a call.

Maybe with having a distributor here in BC will reduce the cost.

Having insurance is great but how long does it take the insurance company to approve your claim. My experience with all types of insurance is they first investigate the claim, then delay, after a lot of back and fourth they might approve it and a month +++ later.

The first thing the insurer will ask is did you run into anything (like rocks). The owner of these props stored his boat beside our boat in Okanagan Lake and he drinks a lot. Three S/S props powered by 3 X 454ci. I think he got denied.

I've read up on these fairly in depth and don't believe I've read any non paid user feedback claiming that type of improvement once the boat is properly on plane. I'd like there to be as I'd probably buy a set if I got 20% mileage improvement in the mid range (3-4000 revs). I'd pay them off in about 2 years (assuming I didn't destroy them or someone steals them). I'd also like to run a prop that offers a noteable noise reduction which everyone paid or not seems to report.

The paid comparison typically features a borderline (or terribly) underpowered boat that's poorly propped. If it was propped with an efficient prop in the first place the sharrow ain't offering more than 10% gains.

Often the 20% improvement number is due to the sharrow getting on plane considerably earlier vs the improper prop choice for the boat (intentionally chosen for the promo).

Example: sharrow at 3500rpm - 15mph (it's on plane as thats one thing they do well is get on plane quick)
Yamaha SWS at 3500rpm - 11mph (it ain't on plane yet, its just nose in the air plowing along).
Oh look. What a miracle! A 30% improvement in mileage.

My friend says they seem to get up pretty quick. He has not calculated mileage or really looked at that. He will. Just not there yet. It would be interesting to swap his old ones on, and check the mileage. It would take effort but then you would know.

@TMan thanks nice to see one of their new smaller props in action. 200hp sharrow prop is 2500 usd vs 500-1150 usd for regular stainless (I was quoted $1,600 CAD for regular stainless prop from a local dealer with 150hp merc engine).

Theoretically, buying a single 200hp I could see an increase in range of 30-60 miles on 300 miles at cruise. When repowering with a single it makes the most sense to me. Once you have dropped 1000-5000 initially on props (single or duals) it's tough to justify spending another $3500 to $16,600 on new sharrow props. While repowering and spending 25-120k, (I image dual 400-600hp with virtual anchor/dual station will be 120k) an expensive prop or prop can seem like a "reasonable" expense.

Maybe we are also just seeing an "early adaptor pricing strategy" similar to cybertruck pricing, you can get a new cybertruck in the US for, 75k usd, where a few months ago it was 100k usd, but still is in Canada for some reason. Eventually, the premium early adopter pay comes down to expand the target market.

Sharrow is $33 month for a ding repair plan, not really a good deal compared to some premium similar-priced products like premium carbon bike wheels, which are free replacement, no questions asked.
