Applebee's

There used to be an awesome steak house in Victoria close to downtown....I can't recall the street but it would be roughly on the eastern side of downtown. I think it closed down about 5-6 years ago but I used to always eat there when in Vic for work...great food and it was a great room too.

I went to one in Vegas, and it was the worst food I have ever been served- Cause I couldn't eat it, or it would have been the worst food I ever ate- it was that bad. :(

Hey Jim......a buddy of mine Kevin was the RL that opened up Lougheed (I haven't spoken to him since last ski season, but I think he is still at Whistler which has been 'his' for quite some time now) ; I was over at North Van at the time which was my "avenue" that brought me from Wpg to the West Coast. Oddly enough when I left Earl's to go back into the 'business world' and use my degree I was working a few evenings a week behind the bar at the Fish House....slinging drinks, being an idiot and shucking oysters; and occasionally getting in fun yet heated arguements with Karen Barnaby. ;) :p

I was at Earl's in early 1990. I had a house in Sorrento at the time, and I wanted to spend some time in Vancouver with friends so I grabbed a job as a dishwasher there for 3 months. I just loved the people I worked with and the team spirit.

A couple of us rented a boat from Sewell's and went out for a bit of fishing in Howe Sound - only thing we caught was a very small Rockfish about 5" from nose to tail. We took it back to Earl's and filleted it and shared the meal between the 3 of us.

I was at the Fish House in 1994. I was only there for about a month or so. It was part of a training course I was on. All the staff got sent home for Christmas holidays, and the day before we were supposed to go back to work, they called us all in to tell us that we would not be coming back at all, and they were going to renovate the restaurant and bring in new staff - that is when Karen Barnaby came in :p I wish I'd had the chance to work in her kitchen.

I quite understand the staff change - some of the kitchen staff were really burnt out. I remember that one of the suppliers had delivered us a case of live lobsters before Christmas for the staff. One of the cooks had armed a couple of them with knives and set them loose on the floor for the ultimate lobster fight!

yes jim the cafe that you speak of across from The Lodge at Gold River rite beside the gold river is called clayworks cafe and odika is no longer called odika but is called Donovan's Bistro(which is where im workin)we dont have a website yet but do have a facebook page;);) <Snip> holmes*

Does Donovan's Bistro have the same owners as Odika? I would assume that the menu has changed somewhat based on the new name. Always enjoyed the Odika.

I'll make a point of dropping in for a meal next time I'm going through GR. You makin' ribs? ;)

Question: Do you know which supplier has pre-made crab cakes?

The Discovery Inn in CR uses them for Crab/Egg Benies - they are really good if you get the chance. They also do a Friday/Saturday All You Can Eat Prime Rib dinner buffet - well worth the price, and I walk out hurting every time!

Well Applebees called me,they have a 10 year lease on the building. And they are sending me $100 in gift cards for all the problems we had the other night.

Since this thread is already off topic and only picky eaters seem to be commenting.

Just a thought but why don't we have a get togther and have Holmes cook us all a dinner at a boat ramp. I have heard tons about these ribs and his cooking. BBq and bevy's?? You up to it Holmes????

I will supply the first $100 of ribs or beer if it is some where near say Kitty Coleman Park..... Half way to Campbell River from Courtenay.

Yup, Kitty is just off of Coleman Rd. Right were Wolfe Boats is on the Hwy. Just seconds south of Merville. There is a camp ground and a under cover out door area . We could have it else where if you are up to it. I am sure I could get you the racks before hand. Your only in GR. You have to come out and play some time. LOL Sorry but I had to bring this up...

Cheers,

I would almost consider coming over to put my ribs (get rave reviews ;)) up to challenge holmes.........Canuck Ribs vs Hawk Ribs. :p Or Mainland vs Island Ribs.

Ha ha......buddy, I hear yours are awesome!! It was killing us that we didn't get there for them last year as I think they had ribs where we were but they were no screamin' hell.

I am pretty sure they were ribs....maybe Dave can confirm...mind you he wasn't in much better shape than I was when we sat down to our "reheated" dinner. :p  :D
