Anything happening in the Sidney channel?

Hey Tom.

You hounded everyone for info and yet you never posted how you made out. Kinda uncool.

What gives?

We fished sidney a couple weeks ago, just a couple of small guys - heard there was some bigger ones around.

There's something around, just get out.

Agreed. I should have updated you guys, however, we got skunked on all 3 trips :(((, and we spent most of the time figuring out the new boat/electronics/engine/tinkering/repairing/fixing and traveling/navigating etc. Believe me, if I had something more compelling to report, you would have not heard the end of it!!! But yeah, we spent 1/100th of the time fishing that I would have hoped. I just had nothing to report, sorry guys :(

I'd like to make a trip up there again this year and was curious to know if we do fish the Sidney channel, what would the best time of year be to give it a shot again. Thanks again for all your help my friend. I really appreciate it. Hoping I have more to report in the future.

Oh BTW - there were a lot of boats out there after New Years. I was surprised! Most were congregated in the channel on the James Island side, around that pier on the north bank of the piece of the island that points out west (if this makes sense). That seemed like the place to be. All were trolling downriggers, fishing for Springs. I didnt see anyone catch. We found some bait balls on the fish finder, more mid water. We jigged for a brief moment while over the balls, no hits. We tried for halibut the little time we did fish, no hits (got snagged once which was fun hearing the reel go, but successfully got the weight out!). But heck, it was great just to be on the water!

I would wait say April /May should start to see improvement for both Halibut and springs...
Try trolling needlefish squirts and small spoons right off the bottom

You where in the right area Grand Banks.. You can fish the Channel 12 months of the year.. Good spot.. The other boats where fishing Cordova spit another good spot.. The Herring are going to be showing up and Fairfax is good in February.. Craven has it right. Squirts, small spoons and small bait.. But this time of year a big old herring is worth a go.

Not in Sidney Channel, but nearby news. I was on foot on the east side of Saanich Inlet on Sunday and noticed some diving birds and a large number of seals feeding heavily in the shallow bays between Pat Bay and the mouth of the Inlet. Perhaps there are some early schools of herring moving in around Sidney and the Inlet?
