Amundson reel - grinding when reeling

I've had an issue where the centrepin on my Amundson TMX5 seems to come loose when trolling. This makes it quite miserable to reel in a fish because it grinds and binds on the way up. I've had the issue and taken the reel apart a couple times now. I generally tighten up the centerpin but the issue persists. Curious if anyone has had this issue or can suggest a fix.

Some more detail: when I take the screw out after the center pin fails, the whole assembly releases. I then have to take that apart to screw the centerpin back into place. I may have scratched the centerpin trying to re-insert it, which is making the re-assembly challenging, but seemingly the reel is running smoothly now. I'm worried next time I go out, I will have the same issue for a third time and this is starting to feel like I'm making things worse if I keep scratching the centerpin.

Had a similar issue years ago with mine. It totally failed mid fish and I had to hand bomb it in.
At that time I took the the reel to the office in Surrey, or Annacis island maybe. They replaced it on the spot. No receipt. I recall the one fella saying to the other “there’s another one” or similar as if it was a known issue. But since then that reel and one other have been great aside from a clicker spring failing. They mailed (and charged me) for new springs.
Not the most helpful reply I guess. The moral I guess is they were helpful

Very helpful reply - curious if this was a 'me issue' or something others had experienced.

We had clicker springs fail earlier this year as well, and the rep was great about sending out new ones, free of charge. I'm a bit concerned that I'm going to go out and have another failure.

Sometimes if you have had your reel apart for minor maintenance, when putting it back together...tighten the drag knob down snug but not too tight and then install the set screw at the top of the spindle, then back off the drag knob. Sometimes if you don't do that then the drag knob could get stuck and loosen the spindle. Other times if it is the actual shaft that has come loose you may want a shot of Loc-Tite but not the perminent one. Just a tiny bit on the thread before tightening into place.

All my years at PNT in Parksville I have had my fair share of work on many of the brands out there. Hopefully my thoughts will help.

My TMX5 does the same thing. I take it all apart and put back together and it all works fine until I fight a big fish and the middle pin starts coming out and it's retired for the day. I emailed them and they never got back to me. I wasn't sure if loctite was a good idea.

I like the reel, but dislike it doesn't have a freespool so usually fish with my shimano moochers

I tried greasing as mentioned in this thread, but that didn't solve my issues.

Ya, so always tighten the drag knob down snug but not tight, then install the set screw. Then back off drag when not in use. So the spindle or shaft that the spool spins on can sometimes come loose if the drag knob was not snugged down prior to the set screw going in. Do not put loc-tite on the set screw. I am speaking about the thread on the spindle or shaft where it connects to the inside back of the spool. Let set for 15 to 20 mins, then put spool in place and then snug drag knob down, then tighten set screw snug, but not over tight. Back off drag when not in use. Remember do not use perminent loc-tite.

I can trouble shoot & maintain most band salmon mooching/trolling style reels at PEETZ, but I can not provide replacement parts. Basic issues like clean, lube, adjustment etc. I can do. I just don't have replacement parts for other brand reels.

If you need help in Victoria, I am here for ya.

Very helpful, thank you! I appreciate the guidance on adjusting the drag for servicing... I wonder if this was an issue of my own making.

I also chatted with someone at Amundson and they suggested using the permanent Loc-Tite and I can see the argument both ways.

Amundson recommended using loctite when I spoke with them via chat. I will say, I've had a couple issues with these reels and they are always very quick and high quality in their response. Maybe your note just got lost in the ether somehow.

Had similar problems with one of my tmx5. Needed maintenance a few times. The other one has been good. I also use luhr jensen legacy mooching reels and they have been bulletproof and super smooth. A little more money but a better choice i think and a freespool option.
