The first production units had a serious issue with the springs, especially the pawl spring, and many were poorly lubed
The handles were also smaller than most of us like. However, if the reel is opened up, slack off the tension on all springs, then re-tighten evenly so they are snug but not over tightened. Lube with Reel Butter or Superlube only. Like Islanders they don't like much else. Also, the new versions have corrected the early teething problems and have gone to larger handles. They are very smooth, and I have been enjoying mine! Keep em clean and lubed on a regular (like we should do with any reel) and they should stand up very well.
