May be a good time to stick a fork in flights and ferries unless there is a damn good reason to go on them!

Register first and then wait for an invitation to book the shot.

Not just Flights and Ferries. There was an interesting story on a major problem with the land crossings from the US. Apparently if you on a warm vacation in the US for the winter etc. You can avoid a lot of the Covid saftey requirements if you do not fly back direct to Canada. Instead fly into SeaTac and then take a taxi to the border and cross by land. Apparently the US taxi buisness is making a fortune and working their butt off getting Canadians over the border. For an extra fee they will even drive you to your home in Canada while avoiding things like forced Hotel Isolation stays etc.

I don't understand why the mandatory hotel quarantine is only for air travelers. Is it because the thought is that the airplane is the risk, rather than where people were before getting on the plane?

It does seem crazy that you can vacation down in Miami with half of the USA right now, fly to Bellingham, then take a taxi right back to your home in BC

It's all just an attempt to dissuade people from traveling. There's no actual logic to any of it.

There is a 14 day home quarantine for land travel, plus you much show a negative covid test result at the border from within the past 3 days. All travelers must check in every day by phone and they will randomly come to your home to make sure all people are home. Then... ANOTHER negative covid test must be done before you can go back into public.

so... they pretty much have it covered.

Sounds like DBH will be issuing a curfew in the press conference today.
Many in the business community were expecting that to come late last week. It’d be unfortunate but hopefully this will be the last one. Most businesses in UK and Israel are back to normal operations so there’s some light at the end of the tunnel.

That is correct, The travel quarantines for returning Canadians are designed to be punitive, not protective, they have little to do with safety. You can NOT get a taxi right to your home, the uber and cab drivers can not cross the border. Most people are flying to Bellingham, an Uber is about $50US from there to the truck crossing in Blaine. You have to walk across and be picked up on the other side by family, friends or a cab.
1. Most people coming from the US are fully vaccinated - that is ignored completely. Canada is one of highest risk Covid places on earth with pathetically low vaccination rates. Vaccinated Canadians returning from the US are NOT the source of Canadian spread. On top of likely being fully vaccinated:
2. You need to have a Covid test prior to arriving
3. you need to take a Covid test upon crossing the border
4. You need to take a Covid test at day 10
5. You need to self quarantine until day 14, despite the CDC long ago reducing the quarantine period to 10 days if you do not get a test, 7 days if you get one based on actual science. The Canadian Govt decided the CDC quarantine guidance was good for NHL players but not anyone else.

I am opposed to more lock downs for business. I have always been supportive of measures in past, but BC businesses are teetering near bankruptcy in lot of sectors.

This is the figure right now (below) for just the federal CEBA loans for small business right now. 46.11 billion dollars has been given out. That is how many loans business are taking out to cover these lock downs. Even more troubling is that the 40k loans wasn't enough many had to take out additional 20k. Now new lockdown what happens?

I agree with the CFIB statement:

More lockdowns will punish small businesses: CFIB

More lockdowns will punish small businesses: CFIB

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is asking provinces to avoid lockdowns and consider other measures amid the third wave of the pandemic.

So far, B.C and Ontario have imposed lockdown-like measures for the next three to four weeks in order to deal with growing COVID-19 cases.

Premier Jason Kenney said Thursday that the province does not need further restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus – just better adherence to the current public health measures.
“The first two shutdowns were devastating with one in six businesses considering permanent closure, for an estimated 181,000 permanent small business closures expected across the country,” said CFIB president Dan Kelly.
“A third-round will only ensure that number grows higher. CFIB urges governments to now make use of the other tools at their disposal, including making widespread use of the millions of rapid tests sitting in warehouses across the country, as well as renewed contact tracing efforts and expedited vaccine rollouts as alternatives to closing battered small businesses.”
A recent CFIB survey found that two-thirds of small businesses would consider using COVID-19 rapid tests to remain open.
“Small businesses are tired of being a scapegoat for governments’ lack of planning or foresight,” said Kelly. “Too often businesses are closed to send a message to the public to stay home while there is scant evidence that shopping at a local store, getting a haircut or having dinner with the family is a real danger to public health. CFIB urges all provinces to reject Ontario’s bizarre approach of shuttering small retailers while keeping big box stores open.”

Lockdowns are temporary painkillers. They never fix the root cause. Look at Ontario. The number of bankruptcies in the province has been skyrocketing but the case numbers are still getting out of hands. What BC is doing right now with the focused monitoring of high risk areas and avoiding a blanket lockdown makes more sense. It’s really up to the general public to follow the protocols for the next few weeks and until there’s enough vaccine coverage. Small businesses shouldn’t be punished because of the Covidiots and their stupidity.
