ALBERTA floods June 20 ,2013

have some friends in High River.....they had 45 minutes to get their stuff and get out...evacuation order.

Water is 2 ft deep in their basement....

Thoughts go out to all our friends in and around Calgary.

Before moving back to Victoria, I lived in the community of Bragg Creek and was there during the flood in 2005. At the time it was an absolute disaster, but for the most part, the flood controls worked and while people had basements flooded, they kept their homes. This time, the water has overwhelmed most of the flood controls as you can see from these videos: http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/Canada/ID/2392768587/ -- the town has been completely evacuated and power has been shut off. Half the town is completely cut off from evacuation as they only way out is to cross the river. Fingers crossed that the bridge holds.

Here's a guy riding through the townsite on his bike. The shopping mall is submerged -- normally the river is at least 1/2 km away and in the summer, is barely knee deep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xBsFzcCWM

The small community of Redwood Meadows has a massive rock berm built to hold back the water. In 2005, water crested to the top of the berm, and they were able to save the community. From the description above, it sounds like the water is going to breach it.

Downtown Calgary has been impacted in a big way as well:

Welcome to 400 PPM the new normal. 100 year floods every 10 years.
Sad we can't see the contention.
Have a sister that is in one of the evacuation zones that I have not heard from yet.
I'm a little more then worried for her. I know she will be safe but her stuff might not be.
Heard there are incredible videos on global tv right now.....

I checked on some friends that live in Calgary last night they are fine as they live a little higher up the hill, Mother nature is a cruel *****.stampede grounds also under water also..no weather relief in site for at least another day.

Just watched some uptodate aerial footage of HighRiver...it's now an absolute disaster....

some homes up to the roof with water.......whole place is pretty well flooded.

Google "Aerial Flood View Calgary"......or "Aerial Flood View High River".......

I live close to Okotoks and High River. This is the Sheep River on the edge of our farm. The water had already dropped 3 feet when this pic was taken last night before dark. It makes the 2005 "Flood of the century" look like a trickle.

Just announced a controlled evac of downtown calgary.. Shi.t just got more real..

Yikes .. are the water levels dropping at least? from what i have been reading it looks like the flooding has become more widespread...

Winnipeg where I am originally from has dealt with these for years....Most neighborhoods along the rivers such as st vital/st Boniface where we lived were prone for flooding. When I was younger there were some houses on the river in the tuxedo areas. Nowadays there is a lot more development right on the rivers...This is sad but it the risk you take on flood plain, and putting your houses close to the rivers...and same with us in earthquake zone.... Sucks for Calgary.

No surprise that High River got it so bad. Most of the town was built 6 feet above the river. It was just a matter of time...

some people really do make me sick..this guy is one of then, lq on queensland ave in Calgary today..1013381_10151639402157808_1639658056_nduschebaglq.jpgway to help the community
