Alberni Sockeye

a guy I work with went over to port and bought 20 Sockeye on Sunday...$10 a fish...he asked the lady ''is this legal?''
her answer was if you get stopped they are a gift to you from me,
and you are going to smoke them and give them back....

well today at work he tells me he has a friend that wanted some so he gives him the ph# of the lady selling the fish, he phones her and the price is now $8 a fish!! AND she meets him in Whiskey Creek!!!(he's from Courtenay)

WOW whats that tell you?

I am glad they raised the escapement level. For once a move that is to the benefits of the fish and not for any of the greedy stakeholders.

Out this morning... what a beauty day!

Fished near Nahmint, only managed 9 in the tub. We lost about 20... I guess thats what we get when we try and teach the wives how to run the rods and net, haha!

Good fun had by all however!

Seems to be a shade slower out there now... still plenty of fish around, but not as hot and heavy for us anyhow!

Then keep that way for a long time...this year's sockeye fishery and escapement goals make lots of people happy and the whole town too. DFO do this right thing for years to come except political issues.

I mean that in the past, Alberni sockeye fisheries were in trouble with overfishing, mackerel predation, and political issues of sales, and also sportsfishery did not have any retentions of sockeyes while other sectors were allowed to fish for sockeyes. Everyone was pointing at DFO for its mismanagement.

But this year's sockeye fishery is good. All the sectors have the opportunities to catch their shares of sockeyes. DFO does a good job managing this sockeye fishery this year..in my opinion.

I will be heading out tomorrow to try for socs. Never done this before so I don't really know what to do. I understand that you troll a little faster and try to get the fish in quickly. Sounds like depths vary, from shallower early to deeper later. It is necessary to get out before dawn, or does the bite continue throughout the day? Also, we will be launching at China Creek and fishing around there. Is that a reasonable spot or should I put in somewhere else? I can't really run anywhere, so I will fish near where I launch. Finally, is trolling the only way to go or will they take a jig? I hope someone can give me a pointer or two before the alarm goes tomorrow. Thanks in advance, and keep an eye out for the tiny blue inflatable.

after you launch your boat, go to the spot where the boats are..most people said that bite is the best at around 4 30 until 6 30 or 7 30 am. Trolling is the way to go! early morning 30-50 ft..if it doesn't work, go down anywhere from 50 to 90 ft due to warmer waters. fish in front of China Creek marina if you like. mini-pink or red hootchies short leaders 27 inches to flasher. while trolling, go slow and make sure the angle of fishin' line is 45 degrees. Have fun!

If you do a search on this site or any of the other forums you will get more than enough info on how to catch sockeye. Start at 50 feet and go up or down in 5 foot increments until you get a hit. Your sonar should also be marking fish. Some folks use a very short 18 inch leader and verys sparse hootchies or squirts in orange, red, pink and blue. A black hook with an orange or red bead also works.

Well, we made the trip and it paid off. Two limits this morning and I hope to bang off one more next week. That is a fun fishery. It was never white hot for us, but patience, experimentation and on-site learning paid off. Thanks for the tips!

Had my wife and our 3 young daughters out sun morning aged 5,9 and 9. Landed 7 and we lost somewhere in the mid twentys.Stayed out a bit longer than we normally would and am glad we did,at 10:45 the bite was nuts till around noon.Tried hard to get my 5 year old to land one but she lost 8. Deep, all at 89-75 feet mp 15 and 16 were the hot hootchies
