It takes about 10 minutes on calm water to go beyond Lone Tree Point from the marina..anywhere you like to go where the boats are.

If rough early in the morning, then 15 minutes run to reach there.

I want to know...
Since seine nets are coming in on Sunday.. ( 28,000 fish gone..ONE DAY)

What is going to happen IF they do not get enough escapement for the run..just like the miscalulated disaster with the somass chinook last fall?
What disgusts me even more is DFO giving open season on these fish to gillnetters and seiners and did not want to budge on upping the sporties catch.
It seems like DFO is kissing the A.. of one sector with no consideration for the economic benefit to Port Alberni of the sport fishery..Most people I know did not go over there for 2 fish including myself.

you want sporty numbers? quit being so cheap and put a DFO jobby at each point on the inlet where 95% of the boats exit each day (clutesi, china, mactush, etc).

put a few DFO fellas on the river where most of the FN pillage the runs... then get your "36,000" numbers and beyond.

as for fishing on the river and giving them a limit of 4... dont get me started there...

Just dont buy one off the side of the road.... Youll get in trouble[B)]

Now that that is out they will waste the rest.... keep an eye on the ditches and logging roads

well... this is a deliate subject and I need tread lightly.

However... I just feel for some reason that catching 4 fish in the inlet with trolling gear is one task I enjoy and feel I am doing my legally and ethically.

On the other hand, I feel fishing at papermill dam for instance, is somewhat like plucking fish out of a barrel - seems irrational to be able to walk down to a small river bank, jig 4 fish out of there in an hour whilst they are on their spawning bed.... head home, drop the fish off in the freezer. Head back down to the river, jig a few more... and the cycle goes on and on.

Until each and every sector is offering accountable data how can any single sector continue to infer that they are being screwed[???]!

You wanted four a day, you got it - look out cause it ain't gonna last.

Put Fish First!

R.

also... i need to play devils advocate here for just a sec...

so the hypothetical chinook run has/may be 60,000 fish - and the limit is 2 per person/day.

the estimated sockeye run is in excess of 600,000 - and the limit is bumped to 4 fish per person/day.

where is the logical complaint here? am i missing something on how you should be allowed 2 springs per day and not 4 sockeye with such numbers?

just asking?!

...you are missing my point - it has little to do with what you take now, however has everything to do with accurate accounting and real data reporting in order to be able to create a model that is in fact tangible, reliable and backed with support by true science and mathematics.
Thats the problem....
I could read these boards and sit here in Sooke and make up a number too...... then raise that number when Im tired of being leaned on to further the wealth of certain people.... Ill just make my number bigger and have at 'er.
Islandgirl.... the fiasco that has happened the last few years on those springs is sickening [xx(]... WOOOOOHHU we got our 8k good job guys! [:o)]

I suppose it is, and always will be a hot topic.

Fortunately for rec fishermen, limits have gone up to 4 a day. I guess I will take that as a good sign that the run is stronger than "predicted".

Having been out there the other day fishing near China Creek... I can't remember the last time I saw that many sockeye around!

was out this morning around china creek, only got one and seen very few caught. How did you guys do at the Mint?

Cheers,
Jeremy

bacon...bummer sounds like it's cooled off even since Sunday(yesturday),give it a few days after the seiners...

was over there myself on Sunday to get a few sockeye,
we left Courtenay @ 2:30am,launched @ China Creek at 4:30am,we were 1 for 4 just a few minutes into it, kept 6 and lost at least 10,released a few small ones,(don't think they were even 2 lbs!)
there were huge schools of sockeye on the sounder from 30-45ft

Does anyone have any comment regarding sockeye/tides in the Inlet. Is fishing still as productive on a morning ebb as for a flood if the fish are there. Thx.

I cant say with expertise, but my fishing out there over the past couple weeks has had varying tides to a certain degree.

It did not seem to matter the tides for the most part, the most important thing seemed to be the early bite though... 430-630 am or so... then peters off!

This morning was ebbing, we had a tougher day, 5 fish landed... lost about 15. one of those days where we couldnt manage the rods well! haha
