Heading out to China Creek tomorrow morning. Haven't heard much news from the inlet, but I'm just gonna try the areas and gear I did last year for the Sox. I'll post a report when I get back tomorrow afternoon. Don't hold your breathe, tho', my first day is usually a learning day.

I have heard that some locals have went out and had success further down the inlet such as Franklin Narrows area. Better get out as soon as possible. There's a commerical gillnet opening on Tuesday full in the inlet. Fishtactics has reports of sockeye success in Alberni Inlet this week.

Ahhhhhh, have to postpone for one more day, so I guess I'm gonna be fishing with the gillnetters. Thanks for the update guys. I'll let you know on Wednesday how things went.
Spent the last few hours tying up the gear...getting excited. Last year Barkely Sockeye Topic Smiley was talking about a "glitter truck" or "sparkley truck" that his daughter had designed. An army truck hootchie with a foil skirt inside, he said it was killin' the sox had to build one of those too. Had someone on the dock last year said just a black hook behind the flasher worked really good?? Anybody else hear of that??

yes heard of it, but never tested the theory. we use mp 2 pink bubble gum squirts with tandem single black hooks. RAZOR sharp hooks... green flashers. also fish 4 rods, LOTS of flasher (use dummies) 30 to 50 ft . put one flasher every 10 ft on each side so they are spaced out 5 ft. per flasher

Army truck squirt with a silver sparkle skirt inside.
Run it behind a coho special - on a clear base.
Put one out among the pink and bubble gum squirts that you are sure to run. Count the hits...
We find that plain hooks will work but mostly when there is a bite on, not the best when things slow down.

Oh, it was a squirt, we used squirts last year(mp15s mostly) but I thought some of you guys ran hootchies, so that is what I tied up. I don't have army truck squirts...may have to make a run to the Gone Fishin'.
I've got two coho specials and then four other random flashers tied up as dummies. I'm gonna run two dummy flashers and two lines per side. I read some guys don't use a flasher on their fishing line (that would be more fun-to fight these little guys without a flasher) but I think I would rather have more flash and catch more fish than have more fun with less fish...[?] Probably end up trying both and see how it goes.
Finally got our plans straight: leave Comox tonight (tomorrow morning) at 3am, on the water by 5am. Catch our Sox, head out to Bamfield for some Chinook fishing and then back to China Creek for the night at the campsite. Beer
. Back out the next morning and afternoon and home for supper on Wednesday. If anybody from the board is at China Creek we will be in #337, stop by for a beer and a bullsh*t[8D].

we just did the same thing. when you go for springs, go to swale or mearres. we didnt.
we fished kirby/diplock/ and pill pt. onyl caught 2 10lbs springs over 2 days. and no other hits even. verrryyyyy slowwww. got both fish on anchovies at 120 and 150 ft.Degree of Freedom

Don't stick around any of the spots in the Sound if the fish aren't biting...in the summer there are always fish somewhere, if they're not where you are, move! I always try Pill first, just in case, but rarely stay long.

Fished there on Sunday, started at 6:30 am and had our 2 person limit (4 fish) by 7:30 am. Fished in front of China creek. 30-40 ft bubble gum miniplankton

On the DFO site Argent NO 1 took 5000 pieces in one set @ Dunsmuir today the other high was 850 @ Mactush .~~~~Not bad for one set~~~ 9000 total for the 4 day they tested . every Mon - tuesday June 14-15 -21-22 etc

Heading out first thing in the morning, have to make the drive from nanaimo so will leave around 3ish... ouch!
Might initally drop around dunsmuir and troll up towards the narrows... either that or head up to hook bay. we shall see what we are feeling in the am.

Was fishing by about 5 this morning, dropped just past dunsmuir and worked the area from there towards sproat narrows. Got 3 fish in the boat within an hour, then had to wait a half hour to land the last one.
lost 5-6... kept 4 and came home and out of the water by 7.
green flasher with usual hootchies 28" leads... 36 ft was the best depth.
Hell of a lot of boats out there for a Wednesday!

Today's Area 23 Harvest Committee meeting should have been easy with so many fish out there (see attached info).
There are more Sockeye than most can remember. The escapement is well above what was expected on the predicted run size. Commercial fishers are catching their shares in record time. the First Nations have had great success and have more fish than they can sell without a sales agreement. Hopefully that happens soon and we don't have too much waste.
Many in the recreational sector are catching their limits anywhere they drop a line.The test boat shows record numbers of fish inside and outside.
But because, we the sports sector, volounteered, at the pre-season meeting, to start at 2 to show some restraint and let early fish up the river, DFO wanted to hold us to that offer until the reforecast, next week.
With a seine opening now scheduled for this Sunday at 10 a.m. throughout the inlet, we (Jake Leyenaar, Paul Dore, Pete Milliken and I) demanded that our limit be raised to 4. Both First Nations and both commercial sectors supported our position. Stock assessment didn't.
It took a lot of bickering but Bill Shaw and Paul Preston finally agreed and are processing the limit change to hopefully take effect this Saturday. There is no reason that the paperwork can't be done in time. They can close it on a days notice.
Watch for a notice tomorrow and then watch for 6 to 10 seine boats up and down the inlet on Sunday morning, dropping nets and catching 28,000 Sockeye.
I expect the run size to be upgraded at next Wednesday's meeting and the gill-netters and seiners will have another go at it after July 1st.
Please note that if you catch a Sockeye with a freshly clipped adipose fin, it will have a little PIT sender in it's anus area. The creel surveyor or DFO office would appreciate the where and when caught info and the tag back to help track migration and habits to eventually improve our management tools.
