Wow.

Doesn't even quite describe how brutal inshore is right now.[V]

Please god let them be late.

Or DFO accomplished their mission of complete annihlation of the run.

Nice work you terds. Thanks a bunch.:(

Gimee the gaff!!!

Anyone know how many fish have been brought in so far??
kinda glad I did not make the trip over there this year.

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

Ray, your comment summed it up best.

Glad you did not make the trip over.

UNBELIEVABLE to me that the local Chamber of Commerce as well as city officials in Port aren't rallying about this.

Sorta creepy that Campbell River had the same moniker not so long ago... Salmon Capital...

Gotta be some action around this. Sure we're all hoping they are late but... ... ...[B)]

Gimee the gaff!!!

Boy this is sad to hear... 2 yrs in a row I sure hope there late..

It isn't really 2 years in a row....the fish WERE there last year until they ran straight into El Nylon[B)] Hopefully, they are just late THIS year[?]

Ya Jeff:
I guess you add me to the long list of people who are saying the same thing and much dollars never made it to port and other locals this year.Very sad.Even if they "are late" we all know the numbers are so low now a days that fishing is only good one day here and then one day there as they trickle through in small masses. Not like before wen the whole sound would be active for weeks at a time.(With Robertson fish)Sad to say that many of us are just switching from saying "We know what is happening" to "we knew that would happen" Thats how I see it anyway:(
Here's hoping the coho show up and you guys wrap things up on a positive note!

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

Is the Robertson hatchery not still pumping out the fish?
If so, and you aren't getting the returns, it doesn't auger well for ocean survival for the rest of the fisheries.

They are not getting to the river because they keep getting caught in nets. This run is screwed without a huge shift in policy [xx(]

I was out there this morning....No sportsfishers' nets were raised as I saw this morning includin' myself as well.

30+ hours on the water, 4 rods.

6 Salmon landed. 1 lost.

3 about 10#s. One a little over. 2 in the 20s.
5 Springs, 1 Coho (got the Coho as the last fish today)

3 of those were this morning, so this morning wasn't too bad. Saw a few caught around us as well. But tells you how slow the rest of those hours were. Good thing those hours were sunny. Today we were catching them in the rain.

We held 3rd place in today's daily 3, until the boat behind us weighed in.

2 really slow years in a row. I'm not sure I'll be there next year (although I seem to write that every year).

Felt like I was fishing in Vancouver. Coulda saved the Ferry $ and boated around home...

[:o)] It's a secret # http://salmonfest.ca/~~~~ JUST about every fish won a priZe [:o)],~~~~ the Spring run is over ~~~ just Hoes to play with now , they should close the river to the few Springs in there right NOW . ~~~~But wait " Houston we do not have a problem " remember they peak in October [:o)]~~~~ ya right

No worries Boys! DFO is just 'business as usual' doing the groundwork - killing/fishing off native runs - in preparation to bring salmon farming to PA the same as they did to CR.

Makes perfect sense. Who needs wild fish?

"Some could care less if there's any fish left for our kids!"

I dunno what the netting is like in the Sound/Inlet....but there are fish north still on the Island.

We managed a few "combat fishing" in the swells/haystacks out at Portland. There were big fish in Kyuquot just a week ago....so they may still be en route. I heard some decent words from Nootka (offshore) late last week....we manged a few out at Portland before a "chummer" forced us to head in. Bite was just turning on as well....had 2 in the boat in short order and then "chummy" just couldn't take it anymore. :( Fishing was apparently pretty hot at Portland in the latter part of last week.

Lots of bait, whales and birds out at Portland as well.

Let's just hope they're comin' down late.

Drove through Port yesterday afternoon and listening to the radio the host didn't make the numbers of fish being brought in too terribly exciting.

You do know, you are probably more correct in that statement than people want to admit!

I hate to tell you guys, but this is September 8th and I don’t think the main-run is going to be any later – I think, you just had it? When thinking Chinook, think about this? Those Robertson Creek Chinook swim out to the Ocean, turn right follow along the Continental Shelf – straight to SEAK! Now, first you have SEAK commercial fleet/sport, then the NBC commercial fleet/sport, WCVI commercial (what is left of it)/sport, Barkley Sound sport, ending with their return to Port Alberni. What part of that scenario is the government of Canada really interested in?

At its peak Robertson Creek Hatchery produced and released over 9 million Chinook smolts a year, if you were fishing then you will remember – we caught a lot of nice Robertson Springs in the 90’s even with the SEAK commercials basically unchecked. If you go to the DFO website and look in background you will see, “Today, Robertson Creek Hatchery produces 8 million chinook smolts, 1 million coho smolts and 180,000 steelhead smolts each year.” Well, DFO might need to do a little updating? The Robertson Creek Hatchery hasn’t released anywhere near those 8 million figures since 2004 and they have only done it TWICE in the last TEN years! They seem to be running about 2 million or so smolts, short of their goal each year? Unless something changes… the Chinook fishery you have had the last three years – is the fishery!

Concerning salmon farming in Port Alberni, there could be some truth to that?

I'm afraid Charlie is right the late thing just doesnt make sense. Every yr faithfully they start showing up the week before the derby.. as long as I can remember back in the early 80s until 2005-6 when I stopped fishing the inside.. sad to hear. Why doesnt the Government spend a few million more on a inquiry to find out where these fish went? Instead of putting the money into the hatcheries. Makes sense??
