Back in Victoria now after 7 great days in Cabo. Had a few people PM me so figured I would include some info, along with a report.
Fished with Aby Charters for 3 days.
We went in the pangas.
$165 US/boat for 5hrs (2 of us)
+$20 US for live bait.
+$1 US each to walk onto the dock - it is some kind of Marina fee.
We fished all 3 days with Andrea, really good guide - tried hard to put us on fish everyday. He's been guiding there for 30yrs, a true fisherman and guide.
Day 1 - 1 Dorado, 1 Skip Jack tuna, and 8 Sierra Mackerals. They fish the Sierra up against the shore, so we spent the last 1.5 hrs doing that. Lots of fun, kind of like coho fishing - non stop action.
Day 2 - 3 Dorado. We decided we only wanted to fish Dorado, so skipped the shore fishing.
Day 3 - Lost 1 Dorado, 1 Skip Jack and lost a 5ft Mako shark after about a 40 min fight.
Aby charters is located close to the Senior Frogs, which is at one end of the Marina. We would just tell a cab to take us to Senior Frogs and walk over. The girl at Aby got us all setup with licenses, we bought the week long licenses as it was $20 US, rather than individual days, which would have been more. We did this the day before and they were all ready to go the next morning.
There is a floating market in the Marina that Andrea stopped at every morning so after the first day we just picked up lunch, water and snacks there, I am sure any of their guides would stop. Left the dock at 6:30 each morning.
Another thing was the cleaning of the fish. This is done be others at of a cost of between $2-4 US per fish. We didn't know what was going on the first day, as this young guy comes down with a garbage can, loads the fish and wheels them away. They take them down to the very end of the dock, where all fish are cleaned. We just followed him down. They did a good job and had no problem cutting the fillets into 6-8oz portion size pieces. I brought ziplock bags so we didn't have to find them in a store. We stayed in San Jose del Cabo all inclusive Holiday Inn ($40US for taxi to San Lucas) good hotel and would recommend. Back at the hotel the bell hops had a freezer we just dropped the fishing into at the end of each day. Bought a cooler in San Jose ($30US) loaded it up and flew it home, WestJet. It weighed 47lbs and were charged $20 CDN.
We had one unfortunate incident with some local smucks our last day, trying to get a cab. They were insistent they would get us a taxi and wouldn't take 'No' or 'Thanks' or 'F#$@ Off' as answers! They ended up turning away any cab that wasn't going to give them a cut. This got a little ugly, with threats thrown on both sides, until they went to a couple police walking by! At that point we just walked away and headed straight back to the Aby charter office. Helio Garcia was there and we told him what was going on and happening. He immediately went to the police officers and then the tourist bureau; he was NOT HAPPY and pretty upset!!! Talk about above and beyond service! He was so disappointed and concerned it would impact our impression of Mexico, fishing and our overall experience. I assured him it would NOT and that I would be complementing Aby on the great fishing experience.
Well hope that helps any other newbies heading down to fish Cabo.
Huge shout out to everyone on the forum that provided advise - Thank you!!!
