Accommdation Barkley Sound in Summer

Can someone give me a hint for a nice accommodation for two families with fishing/boating (own boats) ambitions in Barkley Sound? Something like a 2-3 bedroom cottage or duplex or so?

Phone the guys at the Seabeam in Bamfield, they have a house beside the lodge that will do very nicely for 2 families, very private and lots of room .If I wasn't so computer challenged I would post the pictures.PM me if you want and i'll send them over.Dan

Mills Landing has a very nice house and I think 3 cottages.

Osama guides for them and he is on this forum.

Tracey's B&B can easily fit a party that size. Very nice place to stay!

Take only what you need.

You didn’t indicate North/South/East/West Barkley?

On the Ucluelet side I have stayed at Island West Resort several times. They are full service and have a very nice lodge right next to their marina that I would highly recommend, Highly! The resort is also next to and in easy walking distance of the Government Dock, if you would rather moor there. Their link is: http://www.islandwestresort.com/lodge.cfm

If you want to try a little more of a “get away”, I would get in touch with Toguart Bay Marina (they might know of a rental in the area): http://www.toquartbay.com/campground.html

Also, while exploring the Broken Group I ran across this place. http://www.ladyrosemarine.com/lodge.html They had a couple of cabins close to the beach. I don’t know if they rent them out our not, nor do I know if they would let you tie up to their dock. But, I would diffidently contact them. That would have the makings of a real nice trip! The Seachart Lodge is on the north shore of Effingham Inlet in Seachart Channel. It is used by kayakers, so I wouldn’t use the term “fishing boat”… but rather use the term “runabout” and “family holiday”.

Here are links of some places I have seen and know of on the Bamfield side:
Mills Landing: http://www.millslanding.com/
Seabeam: http://www.seabeamcanada.ca/
Tracy’s B&B: http://www.bc-bed-and-breakfast.com/?n=tracy's+b%26b&id=5446&t=hotelinfo

Have a great trip, you will love any part of that area! :)

Thanks guys! Very helpful! I will follow up on those leads - and Dan I will send you a PM tonight! Thanx again!

Whatever happened to the Bamfield Trails Motel? I stayed there probably 15 years ago and it was pretty run down back then. I know it's still there but is it even open any more?? Have they done any renovations? How about the pub?

It's still there...

But just.

The pub was open this summer and rumour is that it has been occasionally throughout the winter as well.

Definitely no renovations to the motel recently.

Gimee the gaff!!!

Just keep in mind when you stay at the Bamfield Trails motel you are supporting the man who has ruined Bamfield...Mr. Jack Purdy.

Any truth to this statement from that article?

Purdy said the "old guard" of Bamfield residents thwarted him at every turn a decade ago, when he tried to transform Bamfield from a dying fishing and forestry community into an all-season "eco-based resort destination town."

Planning committees turned down multimillion-dollar proposals because of technicalities, he said. "It's atrocious the amount of grief I've had out of this little town. I have put 10 years of my life and millions of dollars in there .... The community's just got to quit complaining about Jack Purdy," he said. "If I hadn't poured millions into it, it would have fallen off the edge of the Earth five years ago."

Wow. Very interesting. So, anybody who's familiar with Bamfield, is it dead or is it ok to bring a family there for a week? Or is it missing vital infrastructure such as restaurant, gas station and grocery/general store?

Almost sounds as if Ucluelet might be the better destination especially since you don't have to take the abuse on car/trailer/boat to drive there...? But is there enough shelter on the water for a 17' boat?

Well the general store ran out of my favorite beer last year and I had to drink Lucky....Theres a restraunt at the general store(beside the marine store)Two gas docks, another general store up by the Coast Gaurd station.Depends on what your looking for, fishing or family entertainment. If you had a rv I would recomend Touquart bay over on the other side.Google it there are pictures.Dan

I have never had any problems finding food or gas in Bamfield. Don't know about the road, as I have always boated in.

Also, I fished out of Ucluelet in a 17' boat for 4 years without any problems... just watch the weather. If you look at your charts there is only one channel between Ucluelet and the Broken Group. Once there lots of shelter.

I agree with Dan, and repeat:

Hey guys, Bamfield is a great little town. Don't believe anything about the ******** in that article about Jack investing millions of dollars in that town and getting nothing but grief. The "millions" that were invested just went into the purchase price of the properties that he bought (and he bought a lot of them) and then he proceeded to close them or run them at such a low level that they should be considered closed. Now why he did this no one can be sure, but he's been tied to Martin Chambers and organized crime and people in organized crime often need losses to write off gains in other places no...?

Thankfully he didn't buy all of the property in town, and the people that still live and work there are awesome and there are some really good places to stay with.

Bamfield itself is a great little town, let that be known. If you want to go out to the coast for a couple days or a week and spend your days on the water fishing, exploring, having a good time, going to beaches that are basically deserted there's no better place to go. Bamfield as you guys know has awesome fishing most of the year, there's 2 gas docks there, Purdy's pub, you can get salt-ice in town, there's two small grocery stores, marine store, 2 liquor stores, and you can find most things you want.

The feeling there is much the way it used to be in many small coastal fishing villages, Bamfield isn't Ucluelet or Tofino with a bunch of clueless tourists walking around with cappacino's in their hand looking at the scenery and watching whales. The people that seek out places like Bamfield are more the types that like serenity, good fishing spots that aren't too busy, locals with lots of character and not a lot of people everywhere all the time.

There's lots of good places to stay and things to do in Bamfield, don't let some article about Jack Purdy and his questionable ways make you think that Bamfield isn't worth coming to. It is and people come from all over North America every year to fish out here and enjoy it because it's one of the last undeveloped places on Southern Vancouver Island that's pretty easy to get to. The fishing is rigtht up there with any of the top places on Vancouver Island for springs, halibut and coho and once you there you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, not a few hours away from hundreds of thousands of people.

It's worth checking out if you have never been.
