About those Gill Nets, by Bob Hooton.

A great article completely showing one of the main causes of our problems on the Fraser as well as on the Skeena.

Almost 6000 springs taken in the last couple openings. Glad all those coast wide conservation measures are helping the springs find there way into nets on the Fraser.

Thank you DFO for crippling our economy, towns and people within our industry for your short sighted non conservation measures.

Conservation has never been the goal for DFO, it has always been about transfering stocks to another group.

The only positive note lately is the increased anger by upriver FN bands who are getting fed up with the rape and pillaging in the lower fraser.

Absolutely sickening.

Fish and marine resources of ALL TYPES are being reallocated to FN often times under the guise of "conservation for SRKW's" or other such smokescreens. The govt would much rather give away fish than pay $. Giving fish away is only an issue to a few people, giving $ away is an issue for everybody.

The T steelhead were at a steady 1000 or so for a decade. While this number is low it was enough to provide angling opportunity and restock the system to the same low level. The T steelhead now are measured in the low hundreds and may soon decline to double digits. During this time there has been a continual decrease in commercial netting opportunities and openings but the numbers continue to plummet. Why you say?

The massive increase in unregulated, unchecked, unfettered netting in the Fraser River by the only group who has not seen a decline in fishing opportunity.

I don't see any reason to think things will get any better. If anything, it seems things are getting worse, certainly on the Fraser.

So, if you are fishing for, or hoping to fish for, Fraser river bound fish, you need to be fully aware that the fishing you are enjoying now is as good as it gets because it is only going to get worse.
