A question about level winds

Thanks to all for the advice!

Well, I took a trip to the local tackle shop and thru the calcutta on my bait cast rod.... Not a good combo. I'm a lefty when it comes to reeling and not being able to grip the rod above the reel made it extremely awkward. Took a good hard look at the TR 200 reel, played with it a bit, then checked out the charter series. Now I have a shimano tr2000 charter series with an 8' Technium sturgeon rod. I figure I can use this set up for halibut as well.

Any suggestions as to what line I should be running?

no need to spend that sort of money. most of us are using Penn 330 GTI or 330 GTII. plenty of line capacity, total composite construction, bullet proof, nice easy drag, and not so hard on the wallet. give'um a look see.

If running braid, 60-80 lb test would be good. Some guys run a 40' top shot of mono

I think he wants to use the reel to cast also

I used two Abu Garcia 6500's for almost 10 years downrigging for Salmon-200 yards of 30# spectra and a topshot of mono and you'll be fine.

Great reels ! I have a 320 GTI that I purchased in 1992. It has caught countless salmon and large trout including my largest, a 44 lb. spring and the reel still works flawlessly. I just purchased another 320 GT in July so I can have a back-up setup. I also have a 330 GTI that has many years of bottom fishing use on it with no issues. I don't believe you'll find better reels for the money.
