A Killer Story

Thinning the herd.

It would be great if the local pods learned from them - to take seals, too! Great stuff - thanks for posting.
You guys are the professionals: it's really difficult to get good pictures while that kind of action is going on.
Anyone else seen orca take seals down around Race Rocks? It's an epic event to witness.

Cool story! Thanks Kelly!

Was framing with a guy back in the early 90's named Alex (nice guy) who ran a whale-watching RIB out of the inner harbour during the summer months. He told me of a similar story that happened off Victoria with a boat load of tourists who really got their moneys worth when a petrified seal climbed on board after being chased by some whales. He ended up booting it off and it became whale food eventually.

Wow what a day. My buddy Orest and i were fishing early Sunday morning at Gerald and a pod of killer whales swam by. I had my underwater camera on board so I mounted on a pole just in case they came close. They ended up passing Gerald on the inside but a couple hundred yards away heading north. A while later I got the text to come in for breaky so we pulled the gear and started heading back to Beachcomber. I could see some commotion dead ahead off the spar buoy and when we passed I could see this seal floating around in a daze. We stopped and watched and all of the sudden out of the blue a killer whale sends him flying. For the next ten to fifteen minutes they attacked relentlessly. They could have killed it instantly but instead chose to torment and toss maybe training the young ones. The seal got closer and closer and the next thing I new he was beside the boat and the whales were still after him and a couple times they slammed him into the side of the boat. The poor guy had a look on his face of sheer terror as he tried to climb on my pod. He was tired and beat up but managed to get on with a little help and we took off toward Mistaken Island. I went close to shore in shallow water and managed to get him off the back and he swam straight to shore and climbed on the rocks. We got some amazing video footage of the ordeal and it was a happy ending. Next time I will know better and stay clear of any seals if there are whales in the area but it turned out to be an experience I will never forget. I Still don't know how to post a pic on this forum and have never used Utube but with some help from Kelly and his expierence with media I'm sure it will be something we can all enjoy.......stay tuned....BRS

Nice report gentlemen. I had no idea you had that much going on that day. That website is going to get a wide distribution.

A truly awesome sequence of events and great shots. Shows raw nature at her best and I expect the video will be up there with Natiional Geographic and will probably go viral if it is on U-tube. Could be a money making op for you guys!!

Those are very cool pics. I saw the same pod of whales in Nanaimo that same day heading north. I wasn't close enough to get any pictures but very cool to see someone did. Talk about a 'fish eye' view!

i Just watched this on the Chek 6 news. They did an interview with Kelly. Very well done, and a great story!! Good interview too!

Glad people enjoyed it and we could share. Haha somehow Chek News found out but neither Greg nor I wanted to do the interview but they were pretty persistent. Greg is he still bugging you?

Nice that you guys are big shot celebrities, but you should be out fishing. There's lots of fish coming in.

I didn't add that i got skunked that day......

Pippen i figured it was the only time we will be able to get some form of publicity to why not shamelessly milk it ahha.
