A different type of build thread

Last summer I was in Ukee fishing big bank with a couple friends in a buddies boat and we just about lost a rigger when the swivel base busted. That got the old brain working and I came up with Version 1 of my stainless swivel base. I pretty much copied as much of the Scotty mount as possible and came up with this design.

I made up 10 units and gave them to some buddies on the island. Some of you may have seen them around. Fast forward a few days and me hooking a massive ball of kelp and bending one of the spring pins. Which led me to this fix. It works fine with the pin support but that got that brain thinking again on how to make it better

I wanted version 2 to be bullet proof so I ran my idea by one of the engineers at work and he gave me a thumbs up. This version needed quite a bit more machining, but that would allow the tolerances to be super tight. The black part that you see is a delrin insert that we use at work for all of our rotating features so I built the idea around that. Having a waterjet helps too. Version 2 worked great, minus the fact that after everything was welded, there was some warpage which was a huge pain to get rid of cause I couldn’t machine it due to everything being welded and couldn’t chuck it up in the lathe to turn it again. Lots of sanding with a flapper wheel fixed the problem.

Version 2.1 let me utilize the same idea as 2.0 but made it possible for me to turn the cog after it was welded if it wasn’t true to the inner race. I was also able to shrink it down to pretty much the same height as the Scotty ones. Overall, I’m pretty pumped on how it turned out.

I might entertain the thought. Just build some as I can and sell them when they are done. See how it works out. They aren’t the cheapest thing to build. I hand machine and tig weld everything and material costs kinda suck at the moment.

Any thoughts on making them out of aluminium? Gets rid of dissimilar materials on alloy hulls. ..

Thought about it. I use the Scotty base to mount the swivel base to so it’s just the 18.8 bolts that are really touching the boat. I dunno if I trust the stresses on the aluminum base after awhile. Which is why I haven’t done it.

Ya I get that, there’s a lot of work there. Well when it comes time and I’m finished my double eagle build I’ll sen ya a pm before I go buy the Scotty’s.
