My oldest boy is a mackeral catching machine on the dock at Toqourt, but I am always un-tangling a rats nest from the spin cast kids reels.

Here is my solution.

LOL I was 38! I just put it there for scale. Its a miniature mooching setup. The reel is not an Islander! I could never afford to buy him one. I don't think I would buy him one. He can buy his own. It was the smallest and least expensive fly reel. It was only $37 bucks.

Just amke sure that at the end of the day the Mono is not put on the reel tight or the reel will burst out the side.

Oh, I'm sure it will get wrecked. I do think it will last longer than those little kids rods though. He jigs for mackeral with only 6 or so feet out, when he has one on they might take 30 feet out at the most so the line is just there for cuting off the freys. It would be fun to get him away from the dock in a kyak or dinghy one day.

I go down to the dock every year when we are there and fish for mackeral with the kids.
What a blast on light gear.
What does your kid use for bait ?
Everthing we put on gets stripped off pretty quick.
I spend more time baiting the kids gear than fishing
Dan.

Dan, I'm sure we were side by side at times this summer. We had a seasonal spot this year. With out question salmon hearts on a single small hook works the best.

a split shot and a sparkly fly will work. or cut the flies off a sabiki.

You could also filet a mackeral, cut tiny strips, throw them in some salt in a tupperware and have the kids bait their own hooks.

Well if you ever see a big old gray haired kid sitting on a 5 gallon bucket with a six pack of "Buds" beside him good chance its me.
LOL.
Thanks for the tip on the salmon heart...good excuse to go out and catch some "bait"
As far as the kids baiting their own hooks probably a year or two from now...
I just send them up to get me cold refreshments
Faster you get back faster you can get fishing...
