I am going to be installing a new sounder transducer to my transom ( below water line) so hauling out soon. I will be filling the screw holes with 3M 5300. Anyone know how long before I can haul the boat back to the water? ...right away ok or do I have to let 5300 "cure" for a few hours ? Any seelant a better choice ?

While my transducer relates to saltwater fishing I suppose this should be asked in the boats/motors forum. Move if you wish of course.....

I've used 3m and love it, rock solid when it goes off which is as the instructions say like 48 hours. I tried sika flex and it works great, but when I looked on the tube it stated it was for use above water line. Everyone has their preferences though, but I'm sold on the 3m product.

Isn't the 5300 the fast set and the 4200 the slow set stuff that takes 48 hours?

5200 is the slow set marine adhesive and 4200 is the fast set. 5300 is something else entirely: looks more like a roof caulking with water resistance and maybe only available in the UK?

5200 goes off in a couple of days in the tube once opened. Storing it in the garage fridge seems to make it last 6 months or more before it's too cured in the tube to use.

Thanks for all the information. Thanks mblowers you are correct about 5300. I actually meant to write "5200" when I started the post . I did however find some info and it seems the 5200 is faster cure than the 4200.

3M™ Marine Fast Cure 5200 Adhesive Sealant:

A faster curing version of 3M™ Marine 4200 Adhesive Sealant. The high performance polyurethane becomes tack free in one hour and fully cures in approximately 24 hours. The seal is extremely strong, retains its strength above or below the water line. Stays flexible and allows for structural movement. Has excellent resistance to weathering and salt water. Easy to apply with manual caulking gun.

3m's 5200 is available as a fast cure (red packaging) or slow cure (blue packaging). Fast cures within 24 hours (tack free in one hour). Slow cure 5200 is tack free in 48 hours, cured in 5-7 days.

4200 is a less agressive polyuerethane adhesive. 5200 is for permanant attachment/sealing, if you intend to eventually remove/dissasemble items bonded with an adhesive, use the 4200. For shrink free, below the waterline filling of holes 5200 is the answer (although I have more faith epoxy/cabosil filler covered with glass cloth and gelcoat).
