225 yamaha impeller replacement

I have removed all the side bolts around the casing plus the zinc AND the 2 bolts located underneath-the motor is in neutral-I can move the lower unit quite a bit-fore and aft-side to side but I cannot make the drive shaft drop other than the initial 1/2 inch-is there some other attachment or trick-I thought it would drop out fairly easily after all that-now I'm getting nervous that I will cause some damage. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Try drifting a fallers wedge or similar between the casings. If it dropped 1/2 inch, then I dont think the driveshaft splines are frozen, maybe tight but not frozen. Make sure your speedo tube is disconnected. Also, its possible your shift shaft splines may be frozen.

Thanks for that Dave-I have it coming-it is a slow process-I never thought of fallers wedges-I have been making my own-I can now see a 1/4 inch of the shifter splines and I now seem to have a process of shifting wedges from back to front-hope to have it out today-I think this must come under the heading of "if it ain't broke". I had read that you should change it every 3 years -so I got all enthused-looked easy LOL. I'm leaving the T-stats til next year. I will get some fallers wedges today. Thanks

Well IFL suggestion was the killer-Cut a bucking wedge up the middle so I had 2 smaller(11/2 inches wide) wedges-used those up front and voila! down she came-pretty interesting-and a little unsettling-the impeller looked like it came out of a store yesterday-totally unnecessary 3 days of hard work. Please somebody tell me it was for a good cause and that all the splines are cleaned and regreased. Now I hope I put it together right and I will run it tomorrow. If it ain't broke-don't fix it!!!! At least I know how the water system works and where my shift spline is-and there is no speedo tube to disconnect on this model. I need a Scotch or 2 or 3 or!!

I would have to say it is worth taking the leg off every season and if nothing else regrease splines. You're lucky they came apart. Thats probably the reason they say change your pump imp every year or so.
cheers

I just went through this in the sring and hated it my self. I would do it regularly just to grease and to recoat every thead in antiseize. Cause when I did mine I was drilling out bolts and tring to locate new one.

Had I seen this thread one thing I would of said and warned you about would have been to leave a couple of the legs bolts in by a few threads or have someone there to catch it. As when the splines let go she drops really quickly and is not light or cheap to replace.

Oh and make sure to use 6 point sockets. Not one of the bolts seem to be true if you use 12 point they will slip and distroy the head of the bolt.

Put her back together-went smoothly and pumped good _I'll drop her again next year just to do the splines- Many thanks to Stan at Parkers for taking the time on 3 or 4 occaisions to show me the bottom end of a 225 and to add helpful tips. Sure this is not popular and not everyones experience but credit where credits due.

Yeah-you're right there-he's helped me out over the years but I steer clear when it comes to purchase or warrenty work.
