This was an amazing Sight, not seen by many. This fish was near the world record for Red Snapper! A real Dinosaur! Estimated age of 100-125 years old. Wow...

Enjoy

thats a hog as snappers go...nice I miss getting into those - had a few great holes up at Cortez and got 3 or 4 over 10 pounds. One may have pushed 20, but don't know for sure - I remember it draggin my row boat all around the bay before I pulled it up. The good ol days.

Hate to burst your bubble. Thats no Snapper. It's a yellow eye.

Check the world record again.

Nice fish none the less!

True in terms of the record stats - good point - obviously we always call them snappers up here (sounds cooler!), but they are technically yellow-eye - looks like the record there runs just over 39 pounds. Great eating regardless and you never have the catch and release argument which is handy as well :D

That is a big yelloweye - but it looks too clean to be a real old-timer. I've aged a couple 18lbers that looked like that, and they came out at between 28 and 36 years old. I also aged a 22lber that had ragged and blackened fins, and was obviously very long in the tooth. I couldn't read the lines in the otolith after about 75 years. The older fish was also much more heavily parasitized and not nearly as good eating as the other two.

Nice Yelloweye[8D] good thing you can keep them up or over there.would be a floater anyway if you tried to release it without popping his gut. to big for an eagle:)

nice catch.
