2025 Port Alberni and Alberni Inlet Reports

I had a fun morning with my good buddy Franjo. We had such a great time. The smoke from the fire was on the water the closer we got to Mctush. Otherwise it seemed pretty good. I hooked up on the first fish at 7am, we lost a few that popped the clips but didn't stick. At around 10am Fanjo hooked into a nice one about 20 lbs on a custom spoon I did up for him for a boat warming gift for his new boat. He has a nice Thunder Jet.

It was an amazing day to be on the water. Something that truly reminded me of why I do what do. Passion truly drives me.

Good to see you got out of the shop for fun day!

We fished Wednesday and Thursday. Not hot and heavy but averaged a fish per hour. Biggest was maybe 15. All between China Creek and Lone Tree. All on anchovy. Yellow teaser head seemed to perform the best. Caught 4 sockeye as well. They are quite ugly right now. Released them of course.

Won’t be long
When the commercial boats start coming around

Talked to a 1st nations yesterday at the alberni commercial dock, they get a crack at them on Monday, and he said non indigenous get their opening on Tues,
He said non indigenous went 1st last opening.
We bonked a few 12-15lbers last evening and again this morning in around cous and lone tree.
Heard most are 3yr old returning this yr
Windy here now!!!

Nice to hear the derby gets to first, usually the other way around if I’m not mistaken.

Edited to add…oh never mind, derby probably still on on monday

The inlet has been surefire all week, but this morning it was ON!
There were SOOOO many people catching fish!
Things were very civilized too; lots of room because there was no need to work towards any particular spot.

Is it worth going out while the commercial opening is happening? Is there enough room to troll between nets? I can’t get out until Tuesday.

Wasn't too long ago that leader board had a bunch of high 30's and low 40's listed.
My first PA salmon derby I got the largest fish I personally have caught at Swale Rock using an banged up 6" plug but the boat driver didn't think it was that big so we weighed in late at Bamfield weigh station so unofficial. It turned out out be 38.9 lbs which would have been the third largest that first day, ended up being 13th for the derby and I got the booby (hidden) prize of $125. 38.9 lbs after I damaged the gills and they bled and being in the boat for 4+ hours so likely bigger. I think he thought it was less because it didn't fight so much, took the hook straight up through the nose.

My deceased son caught a monster just across from China Creek when he was 11 yrs old, 52+ lbs but not a derby, beautiful fish, clean and silver. That ended up being something of a family affair dealing with that. Needed a wheel barrel to get it to the scale.

I used to catch a few every year over 30lbs but the last few times they were just under.

My last trip was 5 years ago and we got several in the 25 +/- 3 lb range even through all the Coho and Mackerel.
