2025 Port Alberni and Alberni Inlet Reports

Fished three days over Canada Day and three days last weekend while camping at Macktush. Fish were there and biting… but barely. Maybe it’ll pick up but so far is very slow.

A bunch of us locals keep in touch.
Let's just say that the overall trend so far this year is SLOW fishing.
Hoping that changes tomorrow morning!
It won't change until they get the seines out off the canal. They don't even have their escapement yet. They put the seines in the " Seine free zone" yesterday. Then in 4 years DFO will blame ocean survival rates not their own mismanagement of a public resource which all sectors should have access to.

I keep seeing Instagram posts about how amazing the returns are.

The Barkley Sound Roundtable met this afternoon.
The total sockeye run size has been decreased from 850,000 down to 800,000, due to escapement slowing down dramatically as fish stop entering the river.
The desired overall harvest rate has been further reduced, from 37 percent down to 33 percent, to try and protect the Sproat Lake sockeye, who have been entering the system at a ratio of only 17 percent, versus 83 percent Great Central fish.
This downgrade of total run size, plus a reduction of the desired harvest rate, means that all commercial sectors are now over their allocation, and there will be no fishing this week, by any commercial group.
The only way to fix this problem is have more fish enter the river system, and have more of that new fish be Sproat Lake fish.
We know there are lots of fish in the canal, our fishery proves that. Now we just need to wait and hope they move into the river in time for next weeks meeting.

Let's hope they keep those nets out of the water for the rest of the season. They are over their allocation for this run size. The Sprout escapement is extremely low and those nets should not have been put in the water until it was very clear the required escapement would be achieved. We are now past the peak of the run. Be ready for no sockeye fishing in 2029 and the powers to be will blame it on ocean survival!

Fished Saturday morning 6:15 to 10. 1 for 2. Nothing showing on the sounder. Very few fish caught. I just don’t understand the reasoning of cleaning out the whole inlet over 4 days, wait 3 and do it again. There must be a better way, maybe alternate days? Worst sockeye season in a while….

Fished China Creek for last 3 days and not a sniff. Saw maybe 6 fish caught and nothing on the cleaning tables. Been fishing there last 35+ years and have never been fishless ever. There has been slow years and days without limits but nothing like this. This is very concerning and hope that they are staging outside the sound and will move in later this month.

That's been the approach for years. More than frustrating. That's why after almost 30 years, finally said 'no more' and moved to Ukee. DFO told us during the old camp meetings in the covered picnic area, that Sockeye in the Inlet is managed for commercial harvest and they didn't care about sports fisherman and how much money they brought to the local economy. They didn't care how many people complained. We really miss all the people we met over the years and the Sockeye culture at China Creek, but you only can endure so much.
Now, if we want Socks, we go to Kirby Point on the incoming and fish in close as the schools wrap around the point with the water flow.
Really miss the old Henderson fish we caught at the 'blue roof on Halloween Coyotes and Kripple-k's. At least we still have the memories.
For you all, I hope there are still schools down here in Barkley that are still coming. We saw a seiner setting and running a sounder pattern yesterday here in lower Sound. They were probably looking for them too.
I feel your pain.
Take Care. Be safe on the water. We miss you all. Jean and Barb 'on the lawn' - Tuna Maru

For us, it's always been a family and friends fishing trip to China Creek. Great for the kids and non fishers to get them out there is safe protected waters close to the campsite in case the need to go back to camp. For me its always been about getting them out there and seeing the joy of catching a fish for the first time.

For a group that claims to be the role model for our marine waters, the Round Table here leaves MUCH to be desired!
Factoring in the case of sockeye (once again allowing the bag and net fleets to surpass their quota, downgrading the run and not realizing escapement targets again) I'd suggest that the other areas give this model some hard consideration before outright adopting it.
