Party of 3 fished mid-morning last Saturday to late afternoon; caught 4 sox but lost over a dozen (!)… plenty of action, just rusty with the technique. Some swam into the net right away… some thrashed like hell… some bigger ones fought hard and jumped lots. Many spat the hook(s). Fished all day Sunday… fewer bites, but better conversion ratio: caught 3 sox; ventured further out the inlet, including a couple/few hours in the sound… kept one lingcod, lost a good lingcod, released a pair of rockfish… tried for chinook briefly near Pill Pt… no luck… too early. Fished Monday morning and caught 10 sox (!)… could’ve limited out but botched a pair of landings that should’ve stuck; lots of bites and an improved landing ratio. Depths were between 35 and 70’ most of the time… deeper rods did better than the shallower ones… a variety of pink hoochies… no real preference… even did well on a personally tied pink fly. Did not notice a difference in landing fish on single hooks vs double hooks. 4 rods stacked most of the time.
I skipped today also due to wind. I heard the same as you about results for today before I left the China Creek site for home. Same as yesterday and the day before. Was slow going for most.
we fished from China Creek to Cous back to Dunsmier, down to underwood & back to CC. Not a hit. Saw 3 fish caught. Tried 35 down to 80. Heard it was pretty slow for most & cleaning tables were empty.
Heading down to PA this afternoon.
Will be a celebrity deckhand on a buddy's gillnetter for tomorrow's opening.
Don't worry, all sox below 30' will be safe.
I'll try and report, hopefully I will be too busy picking fish.
