2025 Nanaimo Reports

So apparently Sockeye opens in area 17 (among others) on Saturday. I've only ever fished them in Alberni Inlet. Is there an actual strategy to finding them off Nanaimo, other than slow and lots of flash? Never really considered then as an option around here before now, and just picture trolling around blindly looking.
When you no longer see bottom on your finder. They're there.

I noticed a distinct lack of hits on the 6" plugs and most of the stomach contents was smaller herring to about 5". We were fishing a tubby on one side and a regular on the other and got springs on both, but I would say the tubby with pin pulled outfished the regular side.

But man is it fun to play big fish on plugs!
Most of the time it seems to involve reeling like crazy until they get near the boat then they wake up and go nuts. Very different from fighting fish deep on a flasher.
I did want to add one thing to my report the other night... While I know we've all seen some strange things at the ramp, I do appreciate that the vast majority of people are trying to be efficient and courteous. One guy had to back up a bit for me to get parked and another stayed back to let me out of my parking space near the boat wash. Thanks to those (and it's most of us) who are trying to make the ramp work for everyone.

I caught them running across from Parksville to Texada 15 years ago or more and got into them from a buddys intel. Was just a random migration I thinkg...So not sure if they swim down Parksville/Nanaimo side of strait. Keeping ears open.

Anyone here ever fish for sockeye around Nanaimo?

Crossing over to thrasher area tomorrow am.. suggestions on best place to start?
Fish the the trough off Entrance Island betwee Gabriola and the two reefs just to the north in 220-240 feet of water scraping the bottom for bigger springs, we got our first light bite limits off 6 inch 500 plugs, fishing up high will yield coho, pinks and sockeye. We tried for sox this morning after getting a limit of springs but only managed to find pinks and wild coho, but did talk to guys at the dock who were into a few at first light. Steady stream of fish going by at 80 -100 feet all morning. There will be boats out there so just get in line and follow the herd. I find the flood/slack tide best but it was an ebb today and still pretty consistent.1755465682531.png

Not a bad morning. Got a couple buddies who don't get out enough into some fish. Only played one myself but was relaxing to just pilot the boat and drink coffee. First fish was a 70cm or so slot chinook on a 5" tomic as pictured. A couple minutes later other rod hit a nice Chinook that was clearly over - probably 90cm or so. Also on a plug, a cedar one he had picked up at a farmers market somewhere. Good fun fight and safely gaff released boat side. Then we found lots of bait right on top of the reef (the two humps at 45 and 53 in the previous post), and it was coho city. Managed to find limits for 3 guys in a couple hours, including a fun double header. Decent size ho's and mostly hatch. I think we only released 2 wilds to get our limit. Everything on the 5" plugs. Tried to get that last chinook after that, exploring some of the deeper water and trying flashers and spoons too. A few long line releases before the wind came up around noon and we called it. Never did find that last slot chinook but a good morning none the less.
