2017 vs 2025 boat pricing

I was shopping for a new boat in 2017 and this week I was keeping an eye open for a similar boat for my friend who is looking now. Clear out pricing for 2023 210 Sea Runner vs march 2017 pricing. 2023 has an electronics package and a second steering station.

There was a 7.5% difference in the dollar but likely much less difference when the boat was built in 2023.

75k vs 113k

There is a Gary Fisher video on Youtube from Tofino in 1989. Caught my first and second huge Chinook there same year in my 14 ft tinny with a 15 hp Johnson at Wilf Rock, no batteries, no electronics, and manual DR's. Amazing how many cheap and small boats were in the video. I don't really see too much of that where I fish around the Island, now you need 20+ feet and a whole lotta horsepower. Add a Cabin, SeaKeeper, Autopilot, and many $Thousands in electronics, on the hockey player's advice. Another rich man's game, sad for the younger generations. All the West Coast fishing shows now feature $300,000+ boats, ouch!

Nice! I need to watch that one. My dad's 16 foot riveted aluminum starcraft from the 60's has slayed more fish than most boats out there. Appreciate the dose of reality!

Campion 542 was listed for 47k in 2017.. the last few new ones were listed for 80+ last year

I completely agree. So many people don't understand what's possible with small boats. Sure you need to watch the weather, but there's nowhere on this coast you can't go in an 18' boat and most of it is safely accessible in significantly smaller if you aren't in a hurry. I took a 14' soft bottom zodiac to Tasu and got 10 mpg doing it. When I was a kid I remember a guy winning a derby in Masset out of a 14' riveted aluminum, beating all the charter operators. I had friends that would run to Rose Harbour in little tin boats on occasion. Big boats have lots of advantages, but they are NOT necessary despite what so many people will say.

To be fair, I did go from the 14' zodiac to an 18' center console and now in the process of going to a 24' with a closed cabin. The upgrades have been for comfort and speed, not because the smaller boats couldn't do what I wanted.

I've made a similar progression, but my 14 ft tinny, 16 ft Canaventure, and 18 ft Campion took me to a lot of fishing meccas, just not the Charlottes or Upper Inside Passage past Milbanke to Rupert. Done all the West Island Sounds, Hardy, Central Coast, Douglas and Work Channel, in one of them. Problem is, you do not see those affordable boats being made any more.

I started with a dingy, then a few kayaks, a 15ft old boat that I spent more time working on then fishing but I got it for $1500 and sold it for about the same. The boat that really got me out at a reasonable cost was a used 16ft double eagle. Got it for aboti 9k with new standup top, almost new 50hp yamaha, 6hp kicker, Electric downriggers and a scotty puller on decent trailer. This was only in 2018. That boat was what I learned on. It was reliable, fishy and relatively comfortable. Great starter boat and was so easy to setup, and take out it was like hopping on and off of a scooter.

2 years later I had to chance to buy my current boat 18ft Sliver Streak Carmanah with softop. Boat is actually 22.5ft because the pod is an extension of the hull. This boat addressed a few of the short commings of the 16ft and is setup in a very efficient way. When I got it in 2020 I thought the price was a bit high. It was defiantly over my budget but after the wife agreed we went ahead and got it after some back and forth with the dealer at SG Power (they were great, and I miss them as an option in the area). If I were buying today my same boat would be well out of my price range....

I can't imagine prices would have soared so high in just a few short years.
