2012 TUNA trips

i was only running 60" mono leaders on saturday and didnt seem to be an issue with line shy. Then again we only had 15 hookups for a day of trolling.

We had an awesome day out there on Saturday with much credit to Slivo for finding the fish at Nitnat and to TunaDon for the great communication to help us get on the fish. The camaraderie and communication 60 miles offshore is something special to experience.

We left Mills Landing at 7am with a full load of gear including outriggers, Kill bags, extra fuel bladder(250L), sat phone and a SPOT GPS locater. Travelling with Island Bound we arrived at Barcley Canyon around 9:30AM. Managed to raise TunaDon on the radio and during our discussion, Slivo jumped in to let us know he was catching fish at Nitinat. We ran about 12 miles over to Nitinat and droppped our lines in beautiful blue, 60F water. The first 45 minutes of trolling was slow for us but Island Bound had managed to hook into a few.

Sometime after 11AM, we received a call from TunaDon and it sounded like he was having a bachelor party on the boat. After spitting out some coordinates for us, he ended the transmission with "too busy!, gotta go!".

We caught up with Slivo and TunaDon, dropped our lines and the rodeo was on.

As luck would have it I broke the gaff on the very first tuna we got to the boat and resorted to flipping/dragging them in over the rail or through the back gate.

Over the next 5 hours we had 3 triple headers and ended the day with 22 tuna and 3 newly addicted tuna fishermen. As one of my crew put it, "Salmon fishing is great but this is a whole new high!".

We arrived back in Bamfield around 8pm and took our fish to Mills Landing for photos, cleaning and freezing. Thanks to Jerry and Diane for their great hospitality even when we are not staying with them.

Back in Bamfield Sept 19th-22nd (start of the Tuna Shootout) and hoping the weather cooperates for a couple days offshore!

Will post a few more pics when I get them organized.

looks to me like good Chloro and temp breaks out there around 48 25 and 126 47 but thats about 65 miles from ukee. Whats your max range?

Max range is somwhere around 160 miles but I don't ever want to be that far offshore. if we can get them inside 65 that would be cool......

TOO MANY CHIEFS!!!! :p

If any of you guys hear over the radio a fight starting.....be prepared to rescue Adam if he gets chucked overboard...he's just a little wirey guy who won't stand a chance!!! :D ;)

Unless something changes with those charts I'm pulling the pin for the weekend. I have to sight in some rifles and get caught up with work so I can play hooky during the week and try for tuna again in the following weeks. Good luck everyone:).

the temp shot from today looks good just waiting on the chloro..........maybe need to go 55 miles out...

Which area or shot are you looking at Mike? Seems a little off when you look at a few different shots. Some make it look like its not that bad then some others look like its moved way South.

Just. Just. Coming back now from 60 miles out. We were on the edge outside clayoquote canyon. Water was a bit blue but not totally. Fished with a couple of commies for a couple of hours. But no luck. Pretty glassy overall but some good swells. Some sets were a solid 4 meters as forcast. Did 20 to 24 on on the way out and 26 on on the way in. Totally fishable but different to what we are used to. Tomorrow looks fantastic if you want to go for a long long boart ride. I might actualy not fish and try to find a tuna addict meeting to go to instead. I'm still going to fuel the boat up though. Hehe.
