2012 TUNA trips

oh ya a big thank u to Dale Benham for helping us clean fish. what a process it took us 6 hours to loin all the fish with a few beers in between

it was very nice to meet u Dave and Island Bound. I just loved your quote at the end of the day (ok we'll do one more pass through the KILL ZONE then well take off) priceless. that was a good zone every time we went in we hit something..

MikeP. Please please please expand on the popper information!!!

Hey Birdie....I think I just passed you at Lutz's place, I was half zoned out but noticed in my rearview mirror the tuna skeletons sticking out of the back of your truck!!!

Jealous that mikep got at them with some poppers. It really looks like one of the most exciting ways to fish tuna IMO, with speed jigging a close second.

again, good job guys. very, verrrry jealous

Great report Slivo. Congrats on your trip. That 6 banger must of been like a Chinese fire drill lol!!! Awesome!!!

so we managed to shack off a few of my mag 20 xraps this last trip. Do you guys know were i could find a few in either the lower mainland or the island before friday?

wholesale sports has the 30's still. Better grab some poppers too before I get em.all Bwahahahha.

It would be nice to see a photo of one that Derby used!?

You snuck in late there Sunday night...I saw you just before I head home with my rig..... :)

Yeah my arms are still sore from winching the boat on the trailer due to those low tides lol. We didn't do much visiting this weekend as we hit the sack almost right after dinner each night. This tuna fishing is like running a marathon lol. My ab's feel like I did 5000 sit ups lol :D.

Sounds like sunday was "the day". I am still waiting for pics from my crew to write a report for saturday as my camera went swimming with the (lack there of) fishes at Pill Point on sunday evening. Big thanks again to John and his crew aboard Sculpin for coming out on saturday with us. Can't wait to do it all again at the end of the month.

ya Sculpin, Istvan and I just threw our hands up in the air a couple of times and just started laughing. we hooked up 2 then dropped speed down to 5-6 mph and still hooked up even to 4.9mph but when we slowed down to 3.5 to4.5 mph nothing. we also lost a filet knife it got chuck out into the depths. the water was sooooo blue u could see the tuna 50 ft down.

We had an awesome day out there on Saturday with much credit to Slivo for finding the fish at Nitnat and to TunaDon for the great communication to help us get on the fish. The camaraderie and communication 60 miles offshore is something special to experience.

We left Mills Landing at 7am with a full load of gear including outriggers, Kill bags, extra fuel bladder(250L), sat phone and a SPOT GPS locater. Travelling with Island Bound we arrived at Barcley Canyon around 9:30AM. Managed to raise TunaDon on the radio and during our discussion, Slivo jumped in to let us know he was catching fish at Nitinat. We ran about 12 miles over to Nitinat and droppped our lines in beautiful blue, 60F water. The first 45 minutes of trolling was slow for us but Island Bound had managed to hook into a few.

Sometime after 11AM, we received a call from TunaDon and it sounded like he was having a bachelor party on the boat. After spitting out some coordinates for us, he ended the transmission with "too busy!, gotta go!".

We caught up with Slivo and TunaDon, dropped our lines and the rodeo was on.

As luck would have it I broke the gaff on the very first tuna we got to the boat and resorted to flipping/dragging them in over the rail or through the back gate.

Over the next 5 hours we had 3 triple headers and ended the day with 22 tuna and 3 newly addicted tuna fishermen. As one of my crew put it, "Salmon fishing is great but this is a whole new high!".

We arrived back in Bamfield around 8pm and took our fish to Mills Landing for photos, cleaning and freezing. Thanks to Jerry and Diane for their great hospitality even when we are not staying with them.

Back in Bamfield Sept 19th-22nd (start of the Tuna Shootout) and hoping the weather cooperates for a couple days offshore!

Will post a few more pics when I get them organized.

Great report Dak. Love the crime scene on deck lol!!! Whoo Hoo!

Like IronNoggin say's about tuna fishing .... " it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on"!

Did not see any Risso's dolphins, did you? Just in case I am not the only guy who does not know what a Risso's dolphin is: http://www.cms.int/reports/small_cetaceans/data/g_griseus/g_griseus.htm

We saw some as soon as we started dropping the lines, we thought they may have been false killer whales, but the description and coloring of these dolphins look to be much closer. Especially the description of the larger dorsal fins on those Risso's.

As opposed to this description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_killer_whale

Captain Shawn.....any thoughts??
