1977 Searay 240 rebuild

Friday night got the last of the deck in before my knee went on me, Today I find out one of the young shooters I trained in the army took his own life yesterday. Great weekend.
 
Deck is ready for glass and the head got glassed and the first coat of gel today. I will sand it out and recoat on Monday after the derby. Thank the Lord for rental boats and good neighbors or I would be in the driveway instead of dragging bait and losing gear this weekend.
 
Got lucky reinstalling the toilet intake water through hull last night. I had my son wire brush it clean and after rejecting his efforts a few times he got it clean enough to notice and tell me about the 180 degree crack right down by the flange.

Lucky it was spotted!! Unlucky you have to fix-it-are you paying for it with all your derby winnings!! Lol---Hopefully
 
Good weekend on the water with friends and family, derby winnings were salmon tackle. Stupid flat fish. Saturday was a record breaking day of gear loss and Sunday not a thing. Saturday was also the only day we had a Hali on.IMG_20170523_210811337.jpg Soon I will be out of the cuddy. I would like to glass all the decks this weekend and splash it early next week. Vroom Vroom.

I glassed the cuddy deck Friday night and that went well. Saturday afternoon was a bit hot and sunny and I had a hard time keeping up with the resin. So I sanded out a bunch of bubbles this morning and need to re glass those spots. It is slowly coming along.
 
Deck is glassed. Now to glass in the last few pieces of plywood for stuff to mount to and make it grey, and hatches, and some wiring, and bilge pumps, and windows, and......

So I assume that now you must put on some kind of coloured gelcoat and some texturing ?? I know very little about fibre glass-the actual mechanics of doing it?? I thought boats rotted because the wood rotted- is that because the wood used was raw and not impregnated with resin as your is?? Great job -by the way. Did you just learn as you went or do you have some previous experience?
 
The mat as it is now has a texture to it so I am going to gelcoat over it and call it done. That is what was there before and I liked it better than the nonskid pattern in my hourston. In a few years when it is worn I will sand it and put down something with some grit in it. All wood rots, if you can seal it to keep out the water it lasts much longer. I asked lots of questions before I started and learned much more doing it. Like I would never do it again without a heated shop and a multi year time line. The fact I put 26 gallons of resin and a gallon of epoxy into it surprised me but it is a big boat.

Very nice job, that looks awesome. I will probably attempt this, only on a smaller project this winter. This thread will be read and re read several times before I start. Thanks for the inspiration.
