I am having trouble with my elc. trailer winch, it keeps blowing the fuse (30 amp). I wired it sraight off the battery, works fine without the boat attached. Maybe I should use larger gauge wire, anybody have an idea of what gauge? thanks.
10 gauge wire can handle 30 amps continuous. A motor rated at 30A will almost certainly draw double that or more at startup (under load).
a fuse is a very quick acting protective device- overload it for more than a second and it will blow.
Don't be too quick to just dump a bigger fuse into it. That fuse protects the wire as well. If your winch is factory fused at 30 amps, you can get away with #6AWG wire.
And Check Your Connections! A little corrosion or a frayed wire will make all the difference!
Good luck!
Thanks guy's. I got some 8 g wire and the guy at shawnigan auto parts gave me a 40 amp circut breaker that will reset itself. hopefully no more hand cranking, it always seems i was the only one wearing boots.
