Why do we call it black ice when we can't even see it?

I was on the bus today coming back from Kerrisdale-the driver started braking for a stop halfway down the Arbutus St hill and the hit the ice and started to slide------------------------------

He backed off the brake the ice ended but it was a chilling moment could have been a lot of damage in very little time had there been more ice in that curb lane-I was glad to be riding not driving.

Dry cement or asphalt looks grey in head lights... Ice looks black :p

You're welcome...

Thats why they are professionals... Yup it's unnerving..

With the driving lights I have on my truck I see Black Ice all the time driving the 22km to and from work down island at night and or early morning. Scary crap though.... I hate it..
