Which new moocher reel?

Read up on a lot of vintage posts about the issues with exploding Shimano 4000gt's and also the drag washer issue.

Daiwa has apparently stopped making the M-One plus...although it's still around with combo rod packages.

What's a good moocher reel these days ...if you had to go out and buy one right now?

(in the less-than-150-bucks-range)

Right now I use Daiwa M-One Plus ......never had an issue.......used for years......once you know how to take care of the drag washers there's no problem at all.

Speaking of dragwashers...I read in old posts that Daiwa made a set of carbon drag washers for the M-One Plus which really improved them......can you still get these anywhere?

Is Mike's Reel Repairs still king of the hill for parts?

Mikes is a joke. brutal customer service. But for under 150 I would watch the buy and sell and see what you can come up with or stick with the shimano.

what about those new amundson reels, they are around that price range. I picked up a okuma cavalla off craigslist for $75 a couple weeks ago new it was close to $400

All the posts I was reading were back from 2009-2010.....

Have we come far enough along that the Shimano issues are now all taken care of?......

Gone Fishin' still has boxes of the Daiwa M-One UTD......that particular one comes with carbonfibre washers.....but I think it has 2 or 3 ....and they're not as big as the washers in an M-One PLUS.

I'd spring for the Shimano 4000gt....but they've still got me concerned....

(I spend so much on lures,tape and paint I can't afford a pricey reel....LOL.......)

So who is the "hot" reel parts store these days?

New model
Buddy is running one now, I don't like it
very little drag control.
The old ones are great, almost bullet proof....

What about that Peetz stainless job? Right now it's 25% off on their website, 119 bucks for a May special.

r.s.c.:- is there an "at-a-glance" way to tell whether it's an old one or a new one?

Seafever, see below (hard to explain in words)
old style has no palming ring

The old 4000's has to be one of the best reels made for the dollar. Drag replacement is about $5 each. Used, the reel sells for about 20-$35.

seafever I still have that Seaking for parts if you want it.

I have 2 Seakings ( big spool and small spool)...bought them around 1984.....I use them as trout trolling reels...they don't see any saltwater use....still going good...original washers....

I'm not a Peetz fan....I like reels with a one way drag.

I also like reels that don't make too much noise.......a lot of these newer reels seem to have the built-in seal alarm clock.......way too loud.

Thanks for the pics r.s.c.

I'll take a look at the Amundsens too.....

Anyhow ...where do you get parts for all these reels like Amundsen. Trophy etc. and old Shimano's.?...I would imagine if you want parts for an Islander etc...you call them in Saanich, right?

Re:- Daiwa M-One Plus reels......

There's no such thing as babying them too much.

I wash the reels down every trip with fresh water....and then take them apart and dry them out with a cloth.

Water can get in the washers ...so I take the washer assembly apart and dry off the washers...both steel and rubber.

I put oil on the washers (steel and rubber) and then wipe them until it looks like there's no oil at all.........you want a very very tiny amount of oil on them....on the other hand you don't want them dry as a bone......it's tricky. I use reel oil.

whole op takes about 10 minutes per reel.....

Too much oil and you get "creep" out on the water.....

Cheapy moocher reels......keep seeing these Quantum MR3000's around.....they are quite inexpensive.

From what I've read:-

They are available in Canada only..

They are made in the same plant as Shimano

They are actually a copy of an earlier Shimano...but they have a better drag system .

I've never used one....but they go for 30 to 50 bucks......

right now I'm not convinced that you "get what you pay for' when you buy a high-end reel.

Reading up on Trophy's,Islanders, Amundsons and Rapalas...they all have had or still have issues of some kind it seems.........

ive got 2 of the quantums used them today for the first time. I wouldn't buy them again everything about them is cheap don't waste your $$$$

Roger that...

Looks like the old Daiwa M-One Plus has been replaced by the (new for 2014) Daiwa M-One UTD (the UTD has carbon fiber drag washers...)

Anybody here use an Amundson MSR05?.....(new model)...what's the verdict?.......... think they are going for about 200 bucks......

I use both new and old Shimano 4000's. Got all issues with new ones resolved with a bit of ingenuity. .
I buy all my reel parts from Mike's . No issue with customer service as I do all my own repairs and service work on my ocean gear and all my river level winds . Tons of mods done to my Abu Garcia reels that have them outperforming most other reels on the river..

Are the Shimano 2000 series not still available?
Only improvement the 4000 made, if I recall, was line capacity, but I've never run out of line with a 2000, nor had any other problem.
I even grease them every year or two.
