Where da sooke pinks??

Nothing last night (including another guy I talked to that fished the tidelines all night on pink gear), haven't heard glowing reports of lots of them in general lately. Since the pink derby is coming on Sunday, perhaps some detailed reports here would be good so everyone can chase them for the kids.

Last time we targeted them, (2 weeks ago)
we ran out straight off secretary
in 400-500' and dropped the gear to 70-90'
couldn't keep them off. pink squirt,red flasher.

yeah, me too - that was 2 weeks ago thou - seem to have thinned out last few days. I ran bait on one side last night and my no-brainer pink setup on the other...nothing - tried 35-80 range

The night before last we couldn't keep them off right at Church Rock. They seem to be pretty shallow this year if you're targetting them, but they're still abundant enough at Church to be a bit of a nuisance on the Chinook gear even at 120ft.

Looking forward to the pink salmon festival too.

i was out last thursday and went out to the second tide line off the head. one line at 30 AND ONe ate 70 and we had about 40 in the boat. only kept 8 of course. we started at 6 and were out of there by 11.

Good idea for a thread. Keep it going right up to Sunday.
We'll have a boat full of kids in the Pink Festival as well and will need to know where they are. We are usually trying to stay away from them. LOL!

Tide has been ebbing the last couple of nights and that may be why they have been a bit tougher to find. Looks like a flood for the festival so that may help. We hit quite a few at the head on Tuesday night. They were deep. 80-90 ft.

As we were just having some serious discussions about handling of fish, I hope you meant 40 TO the boat and not 40 in the boat. It's one thing to play a pile for fun and release at the side, but if you are throwing all of those in the boat, letting them thrash all over the place in or out of a net and then throw them back, you are doing them a disservice. Please keep in mind when you get into that kind of action!


Yah tips - agree, reports day by day through to Saturday would be great here. These kinds of events are where we get the kids hooked - if we wasted time sitting off Secretary when they were all off Church, it would be a big disappointment. I'm glad I got my son out a couple times in the last month so he can to be apart of the non-stop action. Now he begs to go daily!

Hey Hootey,

no pinks on the beaches or rivers around sooke, just out a ways. Also take the caps lock off, so you aren't YELLING!

I found a lot of the bigger pinks are keying in on bait fish rather then krill lately. Lots have herring in the bellies and there are a lot of bait balls around. Look for the birds working bait balls and you'll find the pinks.

Don't be afraid to fish as deep as 135 either, a few days they have been stacked down deep. Also play with speed, running around 3.5knts has got them biting on more then a few occasions lately.

A little farther to travel but the Passage at Race Rocks into Pedder was excellent yesterday on the flood. There are also COHO in with the pinks. 20' on down.
