What would fishing-jesus do?

What would you do in this situation?

My wife (without consulting me first) booked a trip to Hornby island for the labor day long weekend this summer (end of Aug to 1st Sept). She had to book it on short notice because her friend (and their family) found a good place. Now here is the interesting part where I have two options.

Option 1) I can stay home in Victoria by myself and my wife would take both my mother and her mother along with our kid and go with the other family... I of course would be home in Victoria and (could in theory) go out and fish on my boat as much as I liked. Since my dad would be here we could make it a guys fishing weekend along with some good fishing buddies.

Option 2) I could go with my family and hang out with the other family. They would tow a fishing boat up to Hornby (18ft aluminum) BUT would only do so if I went so that I could run the boat and help them fish (the other family is very new to fishing and boating). I would be doing much of the work on the boat and trying to find the fish. I would essentially be captain/crewing it. I suspect would be more like a guide and letting them fish most of the time.

I have never fished in the Hornby island area but I know that fishing is VERY good down in Victoria/Sooke during the long weekend. Its my favorite time of year for fishing here. Is hornby island good that time of year for fishing? I get along with the other family ok but I am not close to them. I do enjoy fishing with my friends down here. Is it worth it to experience a long weekend in Hornby island?

So as stated what would you do?

There's only one option here lol.

Personally, I’d avoid Hornby on a long weekend. Especially that one. Way too many people crowding the ferries, beaches, co-op, restaurants, campsites etc…..

I’d stay in town, enjoying the relative quiet due to everyone going away.

Now, mid week….. That’s a no-brainer.

Well, quite the dilemma. Based on 50 years of marriage as of this year, here’s what I would do. I would tell her of my 2 options.
I would tell her that since she didn’t consult with you and the fact that you wear the pants in your family that you are picking option 1.
Now, also based on 50 years, she’s going to tell you that yes you may wear the pants in your family but if you “ever” want to get in her pants again you better change that attitude and pick your Option 2.
As I said, quite the dilemma young man.

Hornby on labour day long weekend is still quite busy. That's the last busy weekend of the year. But its manageable if you time the ferry rides well. (go early in the day)

I fish around Hornby regularly. The fishing will be just fine. Not alot of other boats to contend with, depending on what you are used to. You can go for salmon, ling, prawns all within a short distance.

As much as I like fishing and catching, getting newbies hooked is alot of fun too.

Launch the boat with your dad, at either Comox or Fanny Bay boat launch, don't go on the ferry! Borrow or upgrade to 2106's and get 18/20lbers and learn to fish Hornby. If the boat has a lot of getup and go you can do some wicked day trips. Hornby is a jewel especially if you have a boat. We are watching the weather for spending spring break there, we know 3 families with place and will likely just boat over, but my wife might take the camper over on the ferry, sucker. You can fish victoria until you are dead.

If you show some new people how to fish, you may get new fishing partners. And even if you don't get new fishing partners, you get more people into fishing.....who might not otherwise be. And that's a god thing. And Hornby is a nice place.

I’d do both. Make the wife happy by participating in family and friends time( it’s always better than you think, lol) …. But leave on Sunday evening and drive down for fishing on opening day Monday with your dad and buddies . A couple days teaching your wife’s friends will be huuuggge points for future trips, and it leaves them a day to try there new skills.

You can fish in Victoria and catch AIDS. aka "Angling Induced Divorce Syndrome" or you can still have a happy home life go to Hornby and spend your time playing angling guide while undoing major tangles and learning a new area!

You'll get the look from the wife if you don't join the family. And you'll have all those expectant faces looking at you as you pilot an unfamiliar boat in unfamiliar waters, looking for fish and satisfaction. Good times.

All good perspectives. I do not enjoy trying to go up-island on a long weekend, I also don't like the idea of Hornby island on a busy long weekend. The reason my wife and her friend want to go there is they saw some stupid social media video that said it was the " Caribbean or Hawaii of Canada" Having been to Hornby before and Hawaii both by ship, it is very much NOT.

I am leaning towards staying home but as some of you mentioned even though my wife said I could choose... it feels a bit like that scene in STAR WARS empire strikes back where the Admiral yells "ITS A TRAP!!!"

Yeah. RC was right. There’s only one option then. Divorce lawyers are more expensive than a few stinky chinooks in the freezer.
