What has happened to the donation to salmon enhancement from the big derby in sooke and the derby winners?
Nice to support a derby if they put some money back in!!
Keep then honest!!)

Thats Awesome......always like to hear about people giving back!
I know there are lots of people out there we just don't always hear about em!

Good on ya Bananas......

Cheers

They made $4,000 after costs. They screwed up with the entry fee as they forgot to charge everyone gst. The entry should have been $6300 not $6,000. So multiply 300 X 55 teams = $16,500 that had to go to the feds instead of a donation. Entry is $6300 this year. A first year glitch, bound to be a couple!!

Does anybody know where in the hatchery the donation is going? General running expense or are they doing any special project?
It sure is good to see the community stepping up to raise funds for them.
Good job gang.

Profisher you lost me with your math. Must be another glitch.

Profisher you lost me with your math. Must be another glitch.

Specific tasks they discussed with our donations through Consultants Invitational were upgrading of the water supply for reliable summer water, purchasing new equipment for hatching and rearing, and the generic subsidizing operations and maintenance costs. I assume that has been the focus over last couple years. I'm sure we will get an update from them this year as to future goals/usage for the money as we have donated just over 22k in the last 2 years.

GLC the entry this year is $6300 for each of the 58 teams, and includes the $300 GST. Last year 55 teams paid $6000 and the tournament had to cough up the gst as an oversight. 55 teams @ $300 each = $16,500 that would have been a donation instead it went to the feds.

Thanks Profisher I get it now. Dang those taxes.
So the hatchery is increasing their water and their fish capacity.
I like it. Thanks guys for responding.:)

SO 55 TEAMS AT $6000 = $330000
PAID OUT $175000

SO $100000 TO RUN THIS DERBY?

I NEED TO START MY OWN DERBY!!)

Not sure about the hatchery...there are a few good causes in the area not just the hatchery. I know if they had monies left over they were going to hold it and various local groups would apply in writing for it. They would make a decision on best use by the projects merit. Never thought about the new hst, hope they did. The derby is after July 1st so I would think it has to be charged. That would suck if they get stung on that one too. Better sign Bill V'S petition!!!

Add it all up, 165 room nights, food and staff for 3 days, first year promotion/marketing cost (they will save a ton this year not having to promote) team jackets for 200 plus individuals, hats and shirts for same, tents, (big) it goes on and on with a bunch of smaller costs which all add up. I would invite anyone to start up something like this and turn a large profit in the first year. Maybe better to be in awe like we were that it sold out so quickly!! The right tourney at the right time...we got lucky!!

The donation would be up to $25,000 after covering costs. The donation was never added it to smooth things over, it was there right from the first organizational meeting. (I was there) The argument about pressuring local fish is a non-issue. 55 boats does not constitute major pressure, half of the boats were charter boats which would have been on the water in any case. In fact the boat traffic was minimal and I don't think I fished with more than 15 boats at any spot I fished. Can you say that for the other major derbies? If you have any questions about the donations give Matt a call at the marina, instead of posting hearsay online. I can say one thing for 100% certainty...if the derby doesn't continue to run there never will a donation!

First year problems i can see that. Banana's giving back $1000 good on ya. That's good karma.. What did the first place guys give back after winning $150,000 ?? The Sidney derby, that is half the size in money raises more money for enhancement or about the same. Lets hope they don't drop the ball again this year. O ya Pro i maybe think there were about 10-15 charter guys at most, maybe more if you count the Americans.

I talked to Matt today on another matter and brought these posting up to him. They cleared $7500 after costs. They have donated $6000 to have some net pens at the marina this summer with smolts donated from Nitnat. So the money is going to a project that will hopefully see some immediate results.

Guides that I can think of off the top of my head total 18 and I'm probably missing a couple.

Catch and kill derbies are primitive. That said well done Bananas for the donation. Sounds like some guys would like to see some transparent accounting as well. Hopefully some changes will come and at least a few more bucks will be donated to help the local stocks.

The sad thing is that everyone is quick to criticize and say not enough money is going to help local stocks. How many of you that ***** are actually getting out of your boats and helping in the streams or with groups trying to get projects funded. I see the same dozen or so dedicated people (most aren't avid fishermen) who join groups, get involved in boring meetings and help to get something done. Money is only one part of restoring all salmon runs....manpower and commitment is more important. Sadly lots of armchair criticism and little action!!! The recreational sector has the largest number of users and the smallest number of givers. Sorry but enough is enough it had to be said.

agree there pro - people should try it instead of sitting on the couch - pretty rewarding. Case in point, for all those that complain about those 'wild' coho they are releasing, I challenge you to get out to the hatchery this year and help with clipping (end of May). I'd like to see triple the clippers from last year. Even 1/2 a day helps. I know I'll be recruiting some from the 6 mile poker, but there should be tons here willing - hell, every person that threw back a 10lb 'wild' may have been throwing back a 10lb hatchery - you can help fix that now!
