What Did I Catch?

Cannon ball didn't seem to strike bottom, but the line released from the clip and we had these three spiny creatures on the leading face of a plug.

This is what Google image search came up with.

Picture on Wikipedia is different but it showed more in the search.

Edit: now I look again it does look different, and you say creatures. My brother in law got something looking similar that was white on the prawn traps a couple years ago, theory is that it's a starfish from Asia that falls off the moored freighters. Not sure how you'd pick them up on a plug though.

Here's a cropped and highly edited pic just to show what looked like a mouth. These weren't wriggling, but they looked like animals rather than seaweed.

good grief. looks like seaweed. fascinating. imagine how many little critters have died at the hands of these things thinking the same

I believe they are Basket Stars. The first time I encountered one I thought it was a type of bottom weed or coral stuck in my crab trap. Then it wrapped one of its tentacles around my finger and I freaked just a little bit. That one was about 2’ in diameter but I’ve seen several little ones since.

Those in your pics look somewhat different. Probably same family of animals. I looked up Feather Stars as @adanac suggested and they are a closer match. Very cool to see unique marine life.

The pic of the one on the Rapala lure is a lot like the pic from PE but the second pic is definitely different.
The Brittle Stars all have the 5 leg configuration while Basket Stars can have many limbs. The really big one I referred to in my crab trap looked like a giant version of the one on my lure and on my boat gunwale below

After looking at the link from PE I agree that these are most likely Feather Stars. When I first encountered one I searched up some info and read that this family of critters only had 5 limbs while Basket Stars can have many more but now I see that these limbs can split.
I appreciate the new info because now I know I have encountered both types. There are a lot of varieties down there including this guy below that was entangled with the one on the Rapala swimbait in a way that made it look like one animal at first.

My Marine Biologist daughter first response was basket star, but after a second look changed her view to feather star. Just goes to show how knowledgeable are forum members are.

Are you running a Makaira?

They do make great boats, but I am running a Luhrs 41 Hardtop. I am on my way to Renfrew on Monday so if you see me give me a wave or stop by if you happen to be there next week.
Awesome boat
