West Marine Is Selling Bonamine/Meclozine

Had a look around West Marine the other day and was surprised to see them selling Bonamine aka Meclozine.

It's my Go To drug for motion sickness since they don't make you drowsy and in the past you had to go to a compounding pharmacy with a prescription since it's been discontinued in this country-or so I was told.

Anyway the pills on sale @ West Marine are the same strength as what MacDonald's on Broadway sells-25mg sorry can't remember the price but they aren't expensive.

Cool. I've been buying these at Pt Roberts....aka Bonine in USA. Far as I know, it isn't that the drug isn't legal in Canada, the company just discontinued it. It works!

Never had to go to drugs myself for heading out to sea. My son does suffer from sea sickness out on the banks but I read that most of these drugs are for folk's 18 and older and he is only 14? He can't do gravol as it makes it worse for him.

Gotta agree here. I take Gravol anytime I go offshore or if inshore conditions are questionable. Works for me. It does leave me drowsy though..

I always get my friends to use Scopolamine aka "The Patch". You put them on the night before, sleep off the drowsy. They work for 3 days.

This summer a buddy came with us way out to "The Wreck" on South Bank. Was a pretty choppy day and about 30 mins into fishing he started to complain about being sick (he put his patch on the night before). Upon closer inspection of his patch, we found he had accidentally folded it almost in half and then basically stuck it to a neck hair. Noticed this when he leaned over to puke out his toenails for the 2nd time :-)

Yeah, a friend with seasick issues swears by the patch too. Kind of worries me a little, giving a big enough dose that it lasts 3 days ... can't imagine that's good. But puking for an 8-hour swiftsure mission probably isn't that great for you either, so I guess a good trade. ;-)

Gravol doesn't last long enough, but it's the drowsiness that's really no good. Bonamine lasts a day and doesn't seem to make you drowsy, so has worked for *most* people I know, though I guess someone always has to be the exception, eh DH...

For me, I have forgotten to take my Bonamine on a couple offshore trips and have been fine ... so I figure I'm probably ok. But have had those little twinges when head down tying gear and have witnessed the fun of several hours of dry heaving ... so I'm not willing to take the chance.

Whatever works .... "You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

I had bought the patch that fine barfing day of mine, but the 'risks' outlined on the packaging just creeped me out too much so I went with the bonamine....will stick with the proven one, gravol, from now on though - I'm too busy fishing to get sleepy - only seem to need a catnap on the ride back from the banks and well, its a good way to pass time at that point!

I'm not a pharmacist, but I believe the patches are a slow release type mechanism that actually does deliver the medication over several days and not in one big dose.

Yes, the warnings are creepy -- although I get the first 3 (but the last one in reverse) after my 4th beer....

Remove the scopolamine transdermal patch and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • eye pain or redness, seeing halos around lights;
  • blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light;
  • confusion, agitation, extreme fear, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior; or
  • urinating less...

This stuff all the way for me. I find graval too weak and the patch too strong (side effects). Plus I find it helps with the hangover too!

Whats the general rule around using the patch and drinking alcohol? Tried to get my wife to put on the patch at Nootka Sound, but, the "how to use" instructions forbid any alcohol usage. Thats no fun.....

I think it's the same with any of the seasick stuff -- gravol, scopolamine, benamine -- alcohol can increase the drowsiness from any of them. Doesn't seem to stop my brothers from drinking all my beer while fishing, but they do fall asleep quickly in the evening.
