WCVI - Ukee Report

Sorry for the late pics taken last Saturday after a brief spell out with the crowd about 16-18 miles from Ukee.

That plug looks deadly. Just like a pilchard. When we fished 7 mile the fish were feeding on only herring but would only hit our pilchard tomics. Go figure.

I find all plugs look deadly on the shelf so I collect them but haven't used them much since the trend on here is bait and coyotes mostly. This one was down 2 minutes before it hooked the first big spring. I jigged some pilchards the week before in Nootka, so I had a good image in my mind of what they looked like, so when I saw that one in Pacific Net I thought it would be worth a try even though it's not one of the popular numbers. Picked up another one and a #191 on the way home. The #191 also looks Pilchardy and the one I bought isn't as green as the photo.

Going back next week and will try to compare how they work without spots. My partner only caught cohoes on his spoons above a green kone zone in the short time we were out.

I just returned from a week long trip on WCVI. I fished the Highway and Six Mile outside of Esperanza. I used Anchovies (in helmets), Cut Plug Herring, Coyote Spoons, Hootchies, and Tomic Plugs. I caught several Springs (20 to 32 pounds)on the trip. All of the Springs except 2 were caught on the Tomic #500 6 inch plug. The only thing that I caught on the Anchovies were rather small wild Coho. I even managed to catch a couple of Chicken Halibut on the Tomic Plug. I can't explain it, just reporting the results.

Well things for us has slowed down alot out on the banks off Ukee. We headed out this weekend looking for butts and only managed 3 total for the weekend. Pounded quite a few hours on them. We hit a dandy spring on Saturday, 1 hali, a teener spring, released a few wild coho, and caught some larger rock fish trolling for hali's. Jake puked his guts out this morning and proceeded to catch two decent hali's, I picked up a teener spring that looked like he had been to the river mouth and decided to go back out for one last feast!(was starting to turn color), and a few rock fish again looking for hali's. The interesting thing was today we must of released about 2 dozen juvenile ling cod while trolling for halibut. A good sign or just that time of year?

Here is a shot of the dandy spring my hunting partner caught.
