Volvo 5.7 GI-e No start Diagnosis

Hi All

Hoping some of you inboard guy’s might have some insight. My new to me seasport has a 5.7 Gi-e which cranks but won’t fire. I can hear the fuel pump run and it seems to crank properly. It also won’t fire if I give it sniff of starting fluid which to me indicates a spark issue. I investigated the ignition the input to distributor seems to have a strong spark but then using a test spark plug it has a very weak to almost no spark. I am thinking the distributor is no good. Is there anything I can take apart on the distributor or is it a buy new kind of situation?

I had a similar problem with my 5.0 Gxe. Pumped the throttle while cranking and she started. (You push the button in the centre of your control to disengage the gear)

check the distributor cap inside for moisture or any build up on the contacts, can be just that simple

Pretty sure it’s orignal to the boat so it would be a 2004. It has a coil and I think an electronic distributor.

I am going to start by doing a compression test as suggested by Noluck!

stizzla I am totally on board with podding but it is likely going to happen in the fall.
I had an issue with mine it was the coil

ICM ign control module or possibly a coil issue breaking down. Just to rule it out have you measured the resistance in your plug wires to make sure they are ok and maybe not transmitting the spark down the plugs?

Check to make sure the coil post isn't broken off and confirm the main breaker is ok. Also pull the square relays in front of the intake and make sure they're not all corroded. Definitely sounds like spark. Pull a wire and see if you're getting spark when you crank it over.

Also that's a pretty basic distributor but if you so replace it, make sure it's marine rated.

I have a spare but it's on the boat in storage unfortunately.

Also had a similar issue, turned out to be fuel pressure regulator. Static test gave in spec results, but wouldn't hold high pressure while running.

I gave up and since I am off to sportsman’s shows the next few weeks I dropped it off at Inlet. I was planning on have them go over it anyway. Will report back once I see what they find
I had a 2008 SeaSport with the 5.0 gxi which would act up at least once a year similar to your description. I just replaced the cap a rotor and it started perfect again every time.
