Browsed the leaderboard this morning and was surprised to see only 13 fish weighed in for 60 teams?
I better get out there because everybody knows the biggest fish of the day comes from someone who isn't in the derby!

Hope to see some better numbers today

For those who don't check the link....Des Hatcher in the lead so far with a 33. And his 40th birthday today, so that could be a pretty good present.

Unless the site's not updating properly...looks like Des won with his 33 pounder yesterday. Congrats!

Only 21 fish weighed in total, with only 7 today. With 60 boats, 2 days fishing hard, and all the local slayers ... that's a bit on the slow side ...

that's a little misleading though from the typical derby thou JDS...don't forget, only 5 prizes and they know the weight to beat for Sunday - don't even bother weigh in anything unless you know its mid 20's. If they had random weight draws with it, there would probably have been double the fish.

Still a tough slog, no doubt. Grat's to Des

Yup your rite fishing was not bad this weekend lots of boats getting 4-6 springs a day otter was hot both days just not a lot of big fish kida a 15lb ave so what was wieghed in was not even close to fish caught. Holly ruff on fri aft biggest water i've fished in sooke in a while most boats were pushed in by 4pm a small handfull of us stayed out.

Good work Desy!! And Big d(George Weathrall)

we were out till 7 pm fri, close to 7 foot chop at otter point when we went in. we got 5 fish on friday all eight - twelve lbs . sat we picked up another 4 biggest was 21. that doesn't include the coho and socks.

good to see there's some nice teener's around though :)

I want to personally thank Island Outfitters for donating a Islander Reel and a Custom Rod and Trotac for donating a Black box, both for a raffle. Proceeds are destined for the Juan De Fuca Salmon Restoration Society's Charters Creek project. A quick count indicates about $1,000 was raised. The Charters Creek project includes a 2000 sq ft salmon interpretive centre, a small demonstration salmon hatchery (with the possibility of future expansion if required) stream rehabilitation and a salmon rearing side channel. The centres and hatcheries foundations are both now poured and work is speeding ahead. Local companies and individuals are volunteering their time, skills and equipment for this worthy project.
Funds are still required to finish off the buildings and to bring water into the hatchery and the future side channel. Approx $40,000 is required for the society's portion of the water valves to tap into the CRD's water line. Aprrox $200,000 more is required to complete the two buildings on site, including the interpretive center and the hatchery out building. All donations of materials, labour and cash are greatly appreciated and the society is able to issue a tax receipt. When complete this project will greatly help the local Sooke salmon stocks and also educate the public on the importance of our coastal salmon runs and the dependent eco-systems.
I believe Vancouver Island Brewery also had a donation effort ongoing on site over the weekend and they should be supported for their efforts to the cause. Hope more to come!

There is a basic website up now. (www.salmonforsooke.com) It will be updated with new photos and information asap. Most of the effort and time is being spent down on site at the moment. The money given to us $230,000 from PSF and the Western Economic development Funds must be spent by years end...so there is a rush to get the building up and the money spent. We expect to have the outer envelope complete but will need the extra funds to finish off the buildings.

Sorry missed a question...Ray Vowles is our president. Ray Vowles, Wally Vowles, Al Jones, Elida Peers and Bryan Mooney are putting in many unpaid volunteer hrs on site and behind the scenes.

Interesting did not know that project was going on. PF is there information on this effort on a website? Who is the official organizer/president? Also did any money get donated to Jack Brooks hatchery from this derby?

In terms of donation to JB smiley, the word from Rick was that the coffer of the SSE was filled to the rim and Mel thought it was best to serve another organization involved in the Sooke River that was related to improving the oxygen levels etc etc If anyone knows more specifics they can expand, thats just what I was told during the SSE derby. Obviously don't know if the final count for the Classic means this organization would see a donation.

We will need to talk to Mel regarding this for our derby next year. If they feel there are better places to put our money, than we should do as suggested (or at least break it up some).

I think what is meant is that the current donations are fulfilling the hatcheries requirements. They still need what they are receiving to maintain what they are and have done for a long time. Additional donations will not result in the increase of salmon output at this time, so extra monies would sit in a bank account. There are projects like the one I'm involved in that need funds right now and those funds will have immediate positive results to local salmon production.

Nice to see some money raised PF Are we to assume that will be it from the sooke harbour resort from the approx $390,000 in entry fees

I did drop off a copy of the of the article from the sooke mirror for rick to puruse that stated " The organizers hope to be able to make a donation of up to $25,000 each year from the proceeds of the tournament.Donations are earmarked for local salmon projects"
I'm sure these guys are men of their word
a nod is as good as a wink ;)
