verifying auto fill life preservers still good

Many of you may know this but I didn't and was wondering if the 10 year old auto inflate and self inflate preservers on the boat were still able to operate. You can open the velcro closure and unscrew the CO2 cartridge. It is stamped with the minimum weight to indicate if it is good. Weigh it and if at the min weight the cartridge is good. You also need to check the green safety to make sure the pull rope still works.

One more thing I did not know of many - the primer bulb on the gas line is designed to work in the vertical position with the arrow pointing up. I have squeezed many a bulb in a horizontal plane and wondered why it took so long to prime.

They also only count as lifejackets on a boat if they are being worn. Not saying you have to wear them as long as there is an old style lifefacket on the boat as well. I personally wear mine all of the time when I am alone in the boat or if the other person in the boat would not be able to turn the boat around to pick me up.
