vanier boat launch

Hey Dave....jogged by there the other day. Barricades were still up on the west ramp and the floats weren't in on that side yet. East looks fine and I think ready to go.

Thanks Scott. Getting to be a bit of a joke. Was meant to be completed in February I think. Gotta put my boat in tomorrow night and it's going to be low tide so was hoping the new improved ramp was ready

I have to take the new puppy in the house out for a stroll later.....will wander over and see if anything has changed in the past few days.

Scott Pics of your new family addition?

Yup....meet little Pippa (yup that's the name....my choice...haha) that my gal surprised me with on Saturday; she arrived from Chase, BC. :D She's a Havanese...I was pulling for a Chesapeake which we had 3 of growing up but it was vetoed a while back as we needed hypo-allergenic for my other half. She's been a pretty darn fun alternate thus far! ;)

Dave....will send you a text as well.

Anyone interested, Vanier west launch is still the same as noted above. Good concrete with traction but no floats and still blocked off. Looks the same as it did earlier this week.....progressing on 'city time'.

Havanese? so I guess she's from Cuba?..........

Well I had to pull the boat on on a low tide a Vanier this week. Just thought I'd comment on the ramp "upgrades". As I predicted on another thread about the ramp (which I couldn't find) the cinder blocks have already started to wash away in the lower sections. I figured this would start to happen during the stormy winter season. Wrong, I underestimated how long the shoddy construction would take to start disintegrating. The blocks have already started to wash out. Probably won't be long before the whole lower section of the far ramp becomes a hazard to use. Nice job, vancity.

was there a reason why they just didnt use a concrete slab like all the other ramps? was there an environmental issue that would prohibit them from using a concrete slab?

That may have been the reason. Foreshore lease with the federal govt? No permission to dredge?

I've read a few things mentioned before. I have no idea what the actual reason for this poor construction method was. I'm sure someone will pipe in at some point with the cities real reason for constructing in this way. It definitely won't last too long once it gets pounded by storms regularly.

Kinda sad but i bring a shovel for lower tides to dig enough of a trench so the wheels of my truck are on black top on the east ramp ...yup underneath all that sand is more ramp .

One look at the end of the west ramp i said forget that ,also 4x4's burning out on gravel ... maybe the end of the ramp is temporary till they get the ok to dig .

Was down there yesterday at the low. I saw pieces of rebar exposed on the west side of the launching surface close to the low water mark. looked like leftovers from when they put the blocks in. Tire spikes and rippers if I ever saw them.

Saw someone get hungup stuck at the low water mark and they dug themselves in pretty good and the blocks had moved out of place.....gong show.

I feel bad for the users who have confidence in the facility and then that happens to them.

Hey guys
Planning to launch tomorrow morning in a 7' low tide. My first time This year after the 'upgrade'. Wondering if I should try a different ramp with all the post construction issues that are still going on. Can anyone please comment? Thx.

Can only hope its temporary but I am afraid thats as much as Gregor is willing to do for the Boaters.

Depends on how big your boat is, and if you have a large 4 wheel drive vehicle. My own personal advice would be don't even attempt to use these ramps unless you own a 4x4 if your tires aren't on the upper paved sections.

If your boat is smaller and you have 4 wheel drive you will probably be OK.
