Washington (CNN) -- [Breaking news update 12:01 a.m.]
(CNN) -- The U.S. government shutdown went into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday after lawmakers in the House and the Senate could not agree on a spending bill to fund the government.
The two sides bickered and blamed for more than a week over Obamacare, the president's signature health care law. House Republicans insisted the spending bill include anti-Obamacare amendments. Senate Democrats were just as insistent that it didn't.
Federal employees who are deemed essential will continue working. But non-essential employees will be furloughed.
Most furloughed federal workers are supposed to be out of their offices within four hours of the start of business Tuesday.

I would *hope* that this wouldn't happen in Canada or other similar constitutional monarchy. In theory the Governor General would declare the govt unable to govern, dissolve parliament, and call an election.

You cant have healthcare similar to Canada, in a country the size of the US, with taxes on your people like the US.

Mathematically this is what you get as an end result.

17 Shutdowns in US History. Average length 3 days. Just Political BS

I wish I had cash. Stock market is on sale tomorrow. Wow the rich vs the poor. All over the right for people to have healthcare, so sad. That is going suck for everyone tomorrow.

oh, the market doesn't care about these shutdowns - went up on the last one, currently up now

The sad thing is both Republican and Democrat legislators have declared themselves essential and will continue to get paid while thousands of federal employees will miss their pay cheques...

The "Christian" right, willing to cause any amount of suffering to prevent the poor and needy from getting healthcare. Their entire system makes me sick

This is what you get in a very polarized two party system, especially when one party (Rep.) is so unwilling to comprimise. If the citizens don't like it then they need to let their elected polictians know in a big way.

The right is well organized with the tea party, now it is time for the left to get their butts in gear and organize and represent themselves better, otherwise the right will just keep on bullying their way along IMHO.

20 tea party member of the House of Representatives have caused this to happen. the speaker of the house refuses to take them on hoping to hang on to his job vs legislating. so far the demo are united which means that the GOP will have to capulate sooner or later. the last time this happened as a result of 'the newt' the GOP took in in the next election. those who were there are very concerned, the tea party idiots could care less as ideology trumps common sense.

What is happening is stupid but the Huff Post is not a right leaning organization - far from it

I think he was trying to imply that the NY Daily News (whose cover is shown in the Huff Post) is right leaning. That's incorrect also. The NY Post is right leaning. The Daily News is pretty centrist historically.

As if dealing with climate related disasters wasn't enough, they have to create their own disaster. Stupid. Totally unnecessary. Government contributing to its own demise. Another example of a failing state.

thanks, that the huffpost link was nothing more than convenient. I am well aware of the positions they take. that's for the clarification as I thought the 'house of turds' could not describe what is going on any more completely. I believe that Reid should reject any offers from the tea party and counter with a CR that also contains elimination of the debt ceiling, another congressional creation.
