Tsumani Debris Invasive Species

This is a very bad thing and they seem to be taking it seriously. How does one reconcile that effort and concern with delibertly introducing Atlantic Salmon and their Atlantic viruses to our ocean?

One has nothing to do with the other and anything that arrives from Japan isn't foreign at all that's just media hysteria.

examples include wakame kelp, which can spread quickly, fouling docks and blocking sunlight from native kelp and seaweeds; sea squirt tunicate, which can foul aquaculture lines, and a parasite that can kill oysters, said Chapman

First off Wakame is sold in stores here what's the BFD?

Anything that fouls Salmon farm infrastructure is Good News AFAIC and as to Oysters well most of our Oysters stock came from Japan as anyone who knows anything about BC Oysters will tell you.

All this invasive species specialist talks about is how little info there is-sounds like he's angling for a fat research grant and a half dozen shapely interns to cuddle with.

I suspect some of your comments were intended to be humorous. Seriously though, the list of human caused introduction (by accident or intentionally) of alien species into new ecosystems is a long one and in the majority of cases with a few exceptions, the cost is very high, both environmentally and economically. There is a reason almost all governments on the planet have you fill out forms or ask questions about what you are bringing into the country when you go through customs.

I think you would find that most experts would disagree that the ecosystem of Japan is the same as that of Coastal BC.

The potential introduction of a live species directly into our ecosystem is different than the importation of it as food especially if processed or partially processed.

I do know that introduced Japanese Oyster are well established in BC but a parasite that could kill them may not be, and could have some serious economic repercussions. I am not opposed to all aquaculture.

The introduction of a species that would harm the aquaculture industry and even fish farms could also cause harm to native species and other marine infrastructure.

While all scientists want their research funded and to make a living and some would not be opposed to working with attractive females, the Harper Government does not appear to need any help in preventing habatat related reseach.

You can't fire and muzzel good scientists, eliminate their funding and expect timely information. Harper could not care one bit about what is going on, on the coast, unles commercial operators begin to suffer.

This news article is all of a piece with the dimwitted hysteria over nuclear menace from the downed power plant-which never materialised-it was all hot air and the numbers so small as to be meaningless.

Again this researcher/professor has little credibility and I wouldn't worry too much-the fact is that hulks have been drifting over from Japan to the Americas on the Kuroshio aka the Black Current for thousands of years with no issues of any kind-Japanese DNA has been found in mummies in Ecuador as well as Japanese influences in ceramic ware-in more recent times Masu Salmon have been caught in the Cowichan River and the world didn't end.
