It’s official! The abandoned copper mine site on Mount Washington is no longer polluting the Tsolum River.

Toxic copper pollution had almost killed the Tsolum River, notes the Tsolum River Restoration Society (TRRS).
In 2000 the river was declared dead.

I'm not part of this project but I thought I would post this up as a good news story.
We haven't had many good news stories lately so hope this lifts some spirits.
I can tell you some of the reports of Salmon returning have looked very encouraging.
My hat's off to the folks that pushed this through.
Especially Jack Minard as he has devoted many years to bring this river back.
Well done...... I'm in your debt...

Excellent news. The Tsolum is such a beautiful flow. I grew up in the Comox Valley and I can remember the last years the river had what could be perceived as a salmon run. The fact the mitigating of the leeching took so long is another sad event on the deterioration of the provinces fisheries and watersheds.

Thanks GLG that is the kind of news that makes a person feel that there is hope.

The Tsolum River AGM is at the Dove Creek hall tomorrow from 1-2pm. Just might have to wander down to say "thanks" to the volunteers and even the bureaucrats that did support the major community efforts to rectify this festering sore.

I talked to a lady who was part of the society at VI music festival last year and was impressed with what they have done. That mine was like the posterboy for resource extraction then cut and run leaving an ecological disaster behind. Hmmmm....kind of topical....can anyone say piplines and tankers?

Nice post. Beautiful river. Sure would be nice to see fish come back. Kudos to the folks who clearly worked very hard to make this dream a reality.
