I have 2 trohhy xl qr's and and when you are letting the downrigger ball down if the tension is set light to allow the line to go out smoothly the thumb drag nut backs off by itself. and then you have the most amazing backlash. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix for it?

I never change the drag on my Trophy reel just change to free spool and palm the reel to the speed of your downrigger, it's fool proof as long as you are palming the reel. Drag is always set the same.

there should be a very thin metal washer between the drum and drag spring under the thumb wheel
make sure its there, were the corks lubed before using? they are shipped dry and need some superlube on there or they will grab pretty hard
best thing I ever did to the ones I use to use was to changed out the drag springs for Islander ones, night and day difference

I hold on to the rod when dropping it with my trophy reels, I put pressure on the spool with my fingers while holding the rod in one hand. Then release the brake on the downrigger with the other hand. I let the cannon ball drop and control the reel very well and have very little slack to reel up after I set my depth. It is kinda like a center pin in a way, I bet if when you release the clicker on the reel you could probably cast it like a pin.

I do cast mine like a pin - not too far but it gets it out there a little when required.

These reels are too expensive to have to palm them down the poster should get his fixed the drag shouldn't back off when descending it will probably do the same thing when you have a hog peeling out line.

What difference will an islander drag spring make? I've just done the Shimano paddle upgrade and will never go back to the stock handles. Shimano paddles are about $2.50 each from tro TAC and require a small modification to the paddle (NOT the reel) to work.

Otherwise great reels now that it has new handles its basically on par with my MR3.

Sorry I meant the screw in the middle... That might be too loose...

Oh ok ! thought i was missing something lol .

The Islander spring up grade was the best mod ever. Its a softer spring so you get way more adj in the drag.

So you mean I won't go from free spool to a total lock down of the drag from only a 1/4 turn of the drag knob anymore?

Sign me up!

What lube does everyone use on their corks I need to pick some up that is good on an islander and a trophy.

Are the MR2 and MR3 drag spring the same size?

Thats a great idea with the mod. When you have new people on the Trophys it can be a bit of a disaster (birds nest city)

drag goes from instant on with a 1/4 turn to nice and smooth with a good 2-2-1/2 turns to lock up.
superlube works best as per Islander

Spend a few more bucks on some Islander MR2 reels and save the headaches. I own four Trophy XL and am very disappointed with them from handles falling off to a drag system that is tough to manage. We all spend lots of time and effort to be out on the water, it sucks when you lose a big chinook from a faulty drag system or worse when a handle falls off in a middle of a fight.
