Trevala Alternatives

I have broke 2 of these in the last 3 years while jigging for ling cod, yes I know when you hook bottom it can be hard on the rod but they have broken when I don't feel like they should have. I have a couple other 8 ft rods that take more abuse.

Looking for some other options.

Thanks

Don’t want to assume anything, are they breaking while on bottom or on fish? Are you trying to “jig” the stuck lure off bottom? Like loading the rod and trying to force it off bottom, if that makes sense? If it’s on fish, send me a PM with your ling hole lat/long 😆

One was a fish and the other was a jig that hooked the bottom... using the old ugly sticks they seem to bend in two and never break. The drag was also set light enough that the rod should not have broke before the drag started pulling.

The are not covering the last one under warranty and would just like to try another rod

Wow. I have several of those rods and they are the only ones that we can't break. Although think I busted a tip on one years ago but it's was for sure boat abuse. Those are tough blanks. Alot tougher than most other rods.

The two i broke are TVC-66MH rods ... the jigging rods
is someone using their free hand further up the rod to lift? takes all the backbone out and causes them to break. ask my old man. he owes me 3 jigging rods. lol

Yeah I don't know what's going on, they both broke around the third eye from the bottom ... the first one lasted 3 days of fishing. They are stored properly and have no signs of any wear on the rod.

I still have 2 of them in the boat, love the action and the feel but I am debating trying an Okuma or something else because breaking them is frustrating.

Are they the new models with the grey glue on the eylets?

Like SH I have more than a few of these rods in various lengths and actions. I actually tried to see if i could break it on a 145# Halibut back in the day at the lodge and couldn't. I tried to talk the Shimano rep at a show into making a 9' light action model for a downrigger rod. No luck

I've had these rods bent over almost in a complete circle on big sturgeon in the 9 and 10 foot range. Completely beaten to absolute pulp over many many years of abuse. No issues. Had a ceramic eyelet crack once and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I kept snapping off big fish every single time. Pulled the glass insert out and fished that rod for years until it got ripped right off the side of the boat. If anyone caught a hali near renfrew with my rod and reel still attached I'll gladly give you a finders fee lol

I wasn't the one on the rod when it happened either time, I was driving the boat but there is a chance this could have happened.

I like the action and balance of the Trevelas. Just got a pair last year. But I've noticed there is this annoying groove on the reel seat that bites into your fingers after a few hours of working the gear. I have some shrink wrap grip that I might add there. I wanted to get the Westcoast rods but they weren't available at the time. The Westcoast mooching rods that I have are REALLY nice.

Brent, my guess is there may have been previous damage to the rod before loading up and breaking as I've used and abused those rods as many others have done. I've broken my fair share of fly rods and it's usually in a spot where I've hit it with a weighted fly during a back cast. It's so easy to nick a rod during travel/transport and it creates that weak spot. Could they be bumping up against something on your boat? Maybe pick up some of those protective sleeves?

I’ll weigh in. i had that exact model and i did extensive research before i bought it. i was told by sales rep not to “high stick” these rods ( or any slow pitch rod for that matter) high sticking is basically our typical “tips up “method of fighting a fish. with those trevalas, most of the fluttering action is imparted on the tip of the rod,

It’s better to set the hook, and then keep your rod tip pointed downwards when fighting your ling. Your reel should have enough line retrieval to keep up the slack on a fish. more important when salmon fishing over bottom fishing
