Treble vs Single Point Hooks

Looking for overall opinions on the effectiveness of treble hooks vs. Single Point hooks. Specifically, in use with spoons such as Coyote for Chinook. My experience would indicate that the treble gives you more hookups but you also tend to have the hook thrown more often (shallower hook set). I also tend to believe that the Coyote has better action with the shorter treble hooks leading to more strikes. Any strong opinions (imagine that, opinions on this forum) one way or another?

Thx, heading up to Port Hardy end of the month hoping not to get blown off of the water which seems to happen all too often this time of year.

I use large single hooks on spoons for chinook. The larger the hook (1-2/0 depending on the size of the spoon)the better the hook set and less tossing the hook. I learned this from fishing coho and sockeye. That's my 2 bits

Sharp hooks and full traps!

I find that a sticky sharp single hook is the way to go. Rarely misses strikes IMHO, while offering a much deeper "bite" which translates to more landed fish. Trebles as you note do not bite all that deep, can be worked loose by opening and closing the mouth, and often result in lost fish. Further, when you intend to release fish, the treble often causes a fair amount of damage to smaller individuals, likely contributing to a higher hooking mortality figure.

Although many folks honestly believe that running a heavier hook on a spoon will dampen the action or "kill" the spoon, in the commercial troll fleet we largely understand this to be a myth. I've often rigged spoons with a hook a size or two larger than it came with, and they fish just as well, if not better than the original format.

The only thing I use trebles for anymore is when fishing bait, and jigging for bottom dwellers.

Of course that is simply one man's opinion. Your mileage may vary...

Cheers,
Nog

Large razer sharp single. I find the trebles lip hook and get spit out to much, also the trebles tend to catch a lot more salad floating in the water.

Saying that, there are some succesful fishermen using trebles.

I run a single large Siwash( 1/0 or 2/0) and put my own bend to the bottom ; have found that trebles inhibit the spoons action.

Anybody interested in my comment... I use both!

The treble has caught me a many of fish... but, I have caught a lot off that trailing single hook!

Just my two cents!

hey lastchance,
have u ever tried the gammys? i use both the eagle claw and gammys on bait, i find u can hardly bend those eagles and can sharpen em real nice, but the gammys are so sticky sharp out of the box, but dont hook bottom or something with em , they will bend

I have used the gammies before, but they are a very expensive hook for what they are. Sharp, yes, but worth the money, not in my books.
