Those LED Insert Lights.....

The ones that fit inside a hoochy and strobe ......

There are 2 or 3 brands for sale around here.

The ones I have were bought at Harbor Chandler.

Found out that if you leave them inside a hoochy for quite awhile they will actually start to melt and breakdown from the chemical in the hoochy vinyl.....weakening the casing of the light and possibly causing a leak.

Heads up if you own them.....

I've never heard of this happening and have sent you a pm with my direct contact info. I would like to see the combo you have so I may investigate what happened. Because L.E.D. lights burn very cool- not enough to melt anything-I suspect a chemical reaction has befallen your lure material or light resin-- I need to know what happened so that preventive measures can be taken to thwart this from reoccurring.
Providing our customers with the highest quality products is our goal. Any defect in material or workmanship is not tolerated. If there is an incompatability issue in regards to our products used with others, this is a concern to me personally. Please contact me so this can be resolved.

Thank you

Michael

I use the pirates den ones all the time and haven't seen that problem. I know HC carries that brand. I suspect it must depend on the brand of hootchy's used. I know that some hootchy's cannot be kept in some types of plastic bags or they will melt. The only failure I have had of the PD lights was when I was testing and using the light itself as the head of the hootchy, on the 2nd large spring I think I may have had a leak caused by line abrasion and I like to think crushing!!! LOL.
Still it's a good heads up-who knew that the old golf tee beads and some types of luminesent beads will turn into chemical goop inside some hootchys. I always store the lights outside the hootchy-not for the reason you suggest but because often on the boat on a damp night if the light is inside the hootchy, condensation will turn on the light in the middle of the night causing no end of fun. Watch out for turn on,s in tackle boxes as well-if they are wet-it may turn them on and shorten their lives. I have tested the HC lights for the last 2 years-if fished properly they are an awsome tool and very dependable-I have had some burn out after 2 years-batteries don't last forever even when not used. Pirates Den has a few new tricks up its sleeve and I hope I can report on some new tests early in the next month or so. Remember-Light up your Life!! you'll be amazed!!LOL

I had the tackle box turn on this week after using one for halibut fishing. I just pulled the insert out and wiped it off, left it out of the hootchie and it was fine. Didn't catch any hali on it but then I didn't catch any on salmon belly or herring either. I blame the operator's lack of location knowledge rather than the lure. :)

I could post a picture..

I didn't want to mention the brand name because I think they are all made from the same type pf plastic.

This particular one was put inside a cuttlefish Army Truck hoochy back in November last year.

It sat in the t/box for the duration. I took it out yesterday to put it in a different hoochy. That's when I noticed it was pretty well "eaten" to the point of structural failure.

BTW there isn't a plastic bead made , that I've ever used, that doesn't melt in ANY vinyl hoochy.
Every year I will inspect my tied hoochies that have been laying around for awhile and if they aren't too bad I'll leave 'em be. But I know I have to keep an eye on them because they will melt out eventually at a given point.
I've often used glass beads to counter this problem but glass beads are a little heavier and could change the action of the hoochy so I only use them when I have to.

The chemical thay they use in hoochy vinyl to keep it soft and pliable is the chemical that will eat other harder plastics.
If you put a vinyl hoochy to sit on top of a painted spoon for a length of time , the chemical will eat the paint right off a spoon...( or the inside of certain tackle boxes that are not made to with stand this effect).

Brand of hoochy is irrelevant. All hoochies use the chemical-laden vinyl. If they didn't, the hoochy would not be pliable.

Not knocking Pirate's Den or anybody else.

Most plastics used inside a hoochy will fall prey to the chemical effect.

Fishing line doesn't seem to melt in a hoochy....but that's because the mono fishing line itself contains a "pliability" chemical so it cancels it out.
You can see about half way down the case there is a "belt" of melted plastic.
Also about one third the way down.
The fishing line is submerged/melted right into the body.
The front end where the ring is sunk right into the plastic, where the line goes through
there is a paper-thin hole now.....
The light is a good product...... but in future I will be dismantling the hoochy if it's going to sit for awhile.....

I found that once in the hootchy to removal is impossible as is trying to place it in another hootchy. They become SO sticky it literally sticks to your fingers. Showed it to Dan at Harbour Chandler. Good product, works great but, in my experience cannot change to another hootchy as its too sticky.

Seafever is right, there's some sort of solvent or petroleum type chemical used in the vinyl that hard plastics don't like.

Placing in a hootchy or removing is a lot easier if you put it in filmed with petroleum jelly or I mostly use herring or anchovie jellies. I have honestly not seen the problem-but I use the lights all the time and am continually moving them around-having said that I just went out to my Baja boat and there is a big hali hootchy like a big squid which has been sitting there for 2 years and I just dismantled it with no signs of deterioration. I'm sure if you give Michael (owner) the details he will track it down. It would be particularly helpful if you Pm me or Salty Dog with the brand of hootchy it was and if in fact it was a PD light.

Well, this is interesting to say the least. I've never seen this type of reaction before. Being that light unit was bought from HC, I have no doubt it is one of mine.

I would like to know if any smelly jelly or butt juice was used with this setup, how it was stored, where it was stored, for how long and what was the light unit used with?.. what brand and model lure?...was this stored where fuel or fumes or any other chemicals could have made contact with it?...age of light unit, age of lure..in direct sunlight..

Knowing all of these and having the light unit in hand would be of great help. I can test the resin of the light unit to see what affected it like this.

As for the light unit being difficult to move from one model lure body to another, as Springfever indicated, it is best to use a lube. The reason being that the light unit and the lure body both have smooth surfaces and just like with two pieces of smooth materials, anytime water is introduced, it creates a very tight seal. To help alleviate this, we are planning some changes to the resin molds to give a bit of a rougher {airiated} surface so the sealing effect is eliminated or at the very least, reduced.

While situations such as this are unfortunate, keep in mind that I cannot possibly know each and every event that could arise with the many varied lure compounds, lines, scent oils, exposures and storage habits of everyone who uses the products. Through events such as this, more is learned and corrective measures taken. Like any other product, evolution must take place to keep an item user friendly and reliable as well adaptable to the many uses the item will see.

Seafever, I will be happy to buy the light unit/lure from you so a proper investigation can take place or, if you wish, I will replace the light unit and lure-whichever you choose. You have my phone number, just give me a call.

Thank you,

Michael a/k/a "Salty-dog"

Salty-dog, I have the 3.5" Turd hootchy with the LED light fused in it I could drop it off at HC with Dane if you want. You can see that it was impossible to insert all the way into the new hootchy from being so sticky and what the condition of it is right now.
